I just installed xp pro on a system i built for my parents. we have dial up and there is no antivirus software on this system at all.

About 7 minutes online and I got a little box that poped up that said that there was a problem...said something like RPC error...and that the machine will be shutdown in 30 seconds. and it counted down and then shutdown. I didnt get all the info from the box in time.

So, now I am wondering, did my machine just get turned into a zombie for DoS attacks?
 
I'm surprised it took seven minutes. When Blaster first hit, it seemed to take about twenty seconds.

you need to put SP1 and all the patches onto CD and install them before going online (and install AV from Cd also)

putting an unpatched XP box online right now is silly, sasser is all over the place
 
yep it is the sasser worm for sure! Do all the installation you can offline prior to connection back or you will get hit again and again and again
 
You can't say that it's sasser with certainty. What he describes is exactly what blaster does too, which is still going around.
 
It's Blaster. Sasser uses lsass service where Blaster uses rpc service. Turn on the XP firewall, get an AV on there and patch fully.
 
Okay. It was an RPC error and said some crap about lsass being screwed up too. So bye what you guys have said, it sounds like sasser. I reinstalled XP and now I am going to MS update before doing anything else...oh and turning on the icf.

Now, how do I download all microsoft updates on a "safe" computer so that I can burn it on a disk and use it on the ones that need patching?
 
Here's what you do:

First things first, when you start up Windows, open a command prompt, type "shutdown /a" and wait. When you get the RPC window, press enter. This will abort the shutdown.

Go to Windows update, update entirely, and it will be fixed.
 
Well, I already reinstalled xp and have yet to go onlin with it.

I asked how to put those updates on the computer in the form of a file so that I can burn and install them on a different system that will NOT be connected to the internet.

Get on the internet with a computer that is updated... go to the windows update site... go to your windows update options, and somewhere in there is an option to make "windows update catalog" appear in the left pane.


Do that, go there, and you can download the .exe files for the updates to burn to a CD rom.
 
Turn on the Microsoft Firewall and get the updates.

If you get NTAUTHORITY reboots, just run shutdown -a from command.

ok, just go online. when you get the error saying shutdown about to occur...

go into your startmenu.
find run
type in: cmd
then type: shutdown -a in the command prompt.

it will stop it from shutting down, and will allow you to patch your machine.

There's no reason to put SP1 and all the updates on CD except maybe it's faster to install them that way. All you need is to put a firewall on the computer before you put it online. I don't know if the built-in XP firewall is any good or not, but Zone Alarm is free and good. When I do a fresh install it's always:

1. Install Windows.
2. Install Zone Alarm.
3. Connect network cable.
4. everything else
