Roxio or Nero for DVD burning?

My Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum finally is outdated enough for me to upgrade. Time to buy a new program. Which one should I choose: Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.5 or Nero 6.6.0.14?

I have a NEC ND-3500AG DVD burner. Please comment which software is better and easier to use since I only need some basic functionality.

Also, can Nero do the same thing as Roxio's DirectCD app? I got quite a few DVDs formatted with DirectCD and would like to keep using this format.

Roxio/Easy CD Creator was among the first to have Burning software, but IMO have been completely eclipsed by Nero almost since when Nero first started.

I always recommed Nero, it does pretty much everything, they even have nice applications for beginners to work with DVD video, and on top of it all, it's free. Why not?

As far as DirectCD, that's also commonly known as packet writing, or drag and drop burning. Nero has a program called InCD which does the same thing, but I'm not sure if InCD is directly compatible with DirectCD.

Thanks, this time I'm actually willing to pay for the best software out there. Which do you think of the two would do the trick and which is generally more popular with people?

Also I noticed the Roxio thing comes as one program to set up and configure, while Nero has a multitude of them (potential headaches ++). Which of those Nero programs to even choose? What do you use?

I have not used the latest version of Nero, but Roxio 7.0 came with one of my writers, and I have to say its pretty nice.

The latest version of both apps seem to be grossly overpriced on retail shelves though, 80 USD. :(

If by "direct cd" you mean roxio's UDP (rewritable) format, then no other company's program will read them to my knowledge, nor will other versions of Roxio.

To save your info, you will need to do it now while roxio 5 is still on your system. Insert the "direct cd" discs while you can still read them and reburn them as standard data discs. Use cdrs if you have to. They will then be readable by any system.

I believe this problem can come up with all rewritable formats, but was very common with Roxio products in particular. At least there are many articles (Google web or Google groups) about data that could not be retrieved after OS or program upgrade, and the old downloaded upgrades that created the discs were no longer avaliable.

In short, UDP is OK for intermediate short term storage; but for historical data permenant data discs are prefered.

My vote for Nero and use "INCD" sparingly.

While deepburner will do everything you need to do as well as nero (if it is only basic functionality). Nero is superior to roxio in nearly every way IMO.

Or you could just download the UDF reader from Roxio's website.

Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.5 has caught up with Nero, and now does some things better. But! It is a H-U-G-E program weighing in at around 1.5 gigs installed.

Roxio has always done one thing better than Nero (because Nero just didn't do it!) and that is conversion of analog music (tapes, records, etc.) to digital (.wav)

For one specific thing - creating slide shows on DVD from digital images, ArcSoft DVD Slide Show beats both Nero and Roxio.

I feel more comfortable with Nero ever since I first install and it never give me any headache or erros. I tried Roxio before and it is confusing for me. I don't like InDirect installed used up some resources if I am not using it.

No problems with Nero, even with Rewritable DVDs and Dual Layers. :)
