ROX == rocks? :)

This article [slashdot.org] got me interested in the ROX desktop for Linux. It's derived from RISC OS and takes a very different approach to, well, everything actually, than KDE, Gnome etc.
Not only that, ROX also has a very smal memory footprint, making it more suitable for less fast systems (less than 400 MHz).

Has anyone here already used ROX? Any comments? Complains? 🙂

I have been happy with bb for a long time now. If I get the chance and remember I may check this out though. It looked interresting.

I just did a quick installation of the filer and it looks decent so far. Ill have to play with it some more though.

Well, let us know what your further impressions are, especially of the desktop part of ROX 🙂

Ill be reading some of the docs later and testing out the desktop part for another user on my system (dont want to chance a screw up of my perfect bb configs). All I need is some time and motivation to actually do something 😛

Have you tried it yet? I was impressed it compiled *without problems* on my OpenBSD system. No hacking necessary!

<< Have you tried it yet? >>

Nope, I'm in the middle of a rather large project, so I'm a bit short on time. I might try it during the weekend 🙂

BTW, the system (running SuSe Linux 7.1) I've choosen as volunteer (read: victim) has a tiny problem with shutting down/rebooting. It always hangs when it wants to shut down eth0 (the only NIC in the system). I'm getting tired of watching fsck every time I boot up, but I haven't found a solution yet.

Any suggestions?

Its not so bad so far. The only problem is that I did not see blackbox in the list of wms so Im stuck using fvwm until enlightenment compiles (first one I saw). I dont think I would use this for day to day operation, but its not bad. Any error messages when shutting down?

The ROX system thingy is pretty cool, although a bit of a hack on my part was necessary to get it to work 😛

<< I know this might be insulting, but I finally just replaced my nic that was having issues. Perhaps it's the drivers? >>

Hmm... I haven't tried reinstalling the NIC yet.

Don't tell me: I should have done this a long time ago 😉

Any specific reasons why you wouldn't want to use ROX for day to day operation?

Nope, it just hangs 🙁

What kind of hack?

I prefer bb. I may use the filer, but I dont need any of it really.

Check your logs and make sure.

linking and copying and moving library files. It may have been because of problems with OpenBSD's port of one of the dependancies, but it was pretty easy.

Admit it, you're just too lazy to try anything else 😉

Will do.

I'll probably have some time to spend on the system tomorrow, so I'll make sure to check all logs for any errors.

Probably a blowfish/devil-only problem 🙂
