I believe that that what was hoped to be gained would be Wilson being deemed a liar and therefore, any criticism he shined on the administration could be dismissed without having to address the merits of it.

The spin machine had already gone into effect that Cheney hadn't authorized the mission. If they out his wife as working at the CIA, then they can play the...she sent him...not Cheney...he is a liar and you can't believe anything that he said card. Which was played.

Fair enough...that seems like a reasonable explanation for what could motivate Rove's actions...still seems like a fairly abstract way of dealing with a fairly specific problem, considering the efficiency with which this Administration has attacked the credibility of its critics in the past.

To be fair, Wilson's credibility is suspect. Here is a fairly concise article about Wilson's lack of credibility and the web of lies he's put up.

If you don't consider The Weekly Standard to be a "credible" source, you're welcome to Google for the thousands of other articles on Wilson's lack of credibility.

I'm not interested in other stories from today. Let's keep this on-topic. The issue was Wilson's credibility (or lack of it, rather.) The link I provided is just a small sample of similiar questions and concerns about Joseph Wilson.

Any comment on Wilson's credibility?

even if his credibility is lacking, if the stuff he said was true (and where are the WMD's?), why does it matter at this point in the game?

No, that is NOT the issue. It is, however, the same slimy character assassination you tried to to pull in this thread -- Pabsie's Witless Troll -- before you demonstrated your lack of character by refusing to stand by a word you said.

The link I provided is just a small sample of similiar duhversions and smears by the BushCo Parrot Club.

Any comment on my troll?
Fixed.

That's an interesting point. I'll offer a couple of theories. First, it was reported in some stories at the time that many within the Bush administration and the intelligence community saw it as a chilling warning shot, an indication of just how ruthless BushCo would be against anyone who crossed them. They wouldn't limit their attacks to the dissenter; they would go after his/her family as well.

A second, less Machiavellian theory is perhaps they simply didn't have an easy angle for smearing Wilson. He didn't have a book out (at that time), and he wasn't a former Bush insider, offering a peek behind the scenes that could be contradicted by others in the administration. He was also lauded as a hero by Bush Sr. for standing up to Hussein in Iraq, further complicating their efforts to smear Wilson.
