Routing sound from PC to distant receiver

What is the best way to route my sound board output to my stereo receiver, 30 feet away? We have a party coming up, and I'd like to play MP3's on the PC and have the sound through the stereo in another room. I'm trying to keep costs to a minimum, so wireless is not an option. I'd also like to keep the computer and stereo where they are.

Cables come to mind. I think the kind attached to the 1/8" plug is too thin to go that far, and 2 RCA cables might not work either. I'm thinking of pre-amping the signal into speaker cables, then somehow feeding this in. Any ideas/tips?

well, i used to use the X-10 "mp3 anywhere" system (which i believe is now called the dvd-anywhere system) from x10.com

basically, it's 2 wireless transmitters that take the sound output from your souncard and send them over the air to a receiver connected to your receiver. The system costs about 70 bucks though

As far as wires, it's tough to use wires for that distance, but i have to admit it's the cheaper alternative if you can actually physically run wires that long

my suggestion would be to convert the 1/8 inch output to RCA, and then run that the 30 feet. I've used runs of RCA almost that long, and they work allright, but you're gonna have to crank the gain on all ends

another idea which i currently use involves having a coaxial digital output on the sound card and a coaxial digital input on your receiver. if you have both these, you can run one side of a normal RCA cable across the room and transmit the signal digitally...and that should work pretty well.

Here is another product that you might want to look into: link

I own one and it works great and there are Best Buys everywhere in the US. I even got mine for less since it was an open item. Good Luck!

I thought you needed a 75 ohm cable to get a coax digital output. And those cables tend to be pricey.

nope, coaxial digital can use just any old RCA cable

and 75 ohm cable, if it was actually necessary, is just regular coax cable, which is very cheap

If you have a sound card with a coax digital out and a receiver with coax digital input you can use regular coax cable and F to RCA connectors.

I run about 25 feet from my Creative Live sound card to my Sony receiver in the living room. You can get a F to RCA connector that will plug into the sound card digital out plug. The same for the coax in plug on the receiver. Use the 'digital out' only option for your sound card. This works great and man does it sound good on my Klipsch speakers in the front room!
