Routing number for banks

So I've been with this particular bank for quite some time and my routing number and my gf's routing numbers are the same. My bro decides to open up an account with the same bank (different branch in another state) and the routing numbers are different. Mine was opened in PA and he opened his in NJ even though he lives in PA (he was in the neighborhood).

Even though they are the same bank, it shouldnt matter correct? he can stil deposit money in a PA branch.

Probably has something to do with the bank is a different legal entity in NJ, so it has to have a different routing # .

Is it BOA? I know they are trying to switch everyone to their wire transfer number which i think is the same nationally instead of the ACH number which is different depending on locale

so does the account number tie into the routing number? If he deposits money into a PA branch, the account number should be valid, correct?

As long as he deposits it into the same bank (ie Bank of America, Wells Fargo, etc), it will be fine.

I did some banking in Florida once (my account's in Washington), they mentioned that they had to do a bit more work to pull up my account than a local one, but it wasn't a problem.

Making deposits (dda) is different than wire transfers which relies on ABA routing numbers. Which is different than routing numbers on checks.

thats the thing, if he makes payments via online checks, he has to use the appropriate ABA routing numbers, correct?

Every bank is unique, some have systems in place which it doesn't matter which state you're in. Some are heavily state dependent. Only your/his bank would know the answer to that.
