Any router will serve as something of a firewall, it is inherent in a NAT router as I understand it. What exactly do you mean it is dying? I understand it could be dead, but is should be either working or dead, not "dying."

There isn't a ton of difference under $50, get something popular (Linksys, D-Link, whatever) so it's easy to troubleshoot/find documentation.

I'll second the DI-604 from d-link. I got it a futureshop for 25 bucks with a 25$ MIR, sent in the MIR, came back and pricematched to 20$.

So I basically was GIVEN 5 dollars to but the router

I use the wireless DI-604, which is the DI-524, which is important so I can use the wireless functions of my iBook. I also have 100 feet of cat5e running to the linux computer.

I have the DI-604 as well and it's been great. Easy to work with as long as you are happy with the 100Mbps switch.

it keeps disconnecting me from the internet.
i have an old di-604 sitting here but i can't get it to work right. i can't log into it and it doesn't recognize that the cable is plugged into the wan port.

tried to reset it but that doesn't seem to work. i don't even know if it works to begin with because it was laying around unused for a long time at work.

Well I have the linksys WRT54G, actually I have 2 of them. They've both been working for more than 2 years and have had a LOT of bandwidth through them. (One is for my djpsmusicmix.com site which for a few months in a row managed to put out 100gb's a month easy. Also I use them for all my torrent needs as well, no problems.

I have a DI-614+ which I aquired from someone who thought it was fried by a lightning storm. Turned out that only the power supply was fried and the router itself is now part of my home network. I know for a fact that this router was in operation for nearly 2 years before I got it. Seems like a D-link would be a pretty safe bet.

I just bought a DI-604 last week. $25 after MIR. It's doing fine. I set it up yesterday.
