routers

why does every single router ive ever used automatically impede me from receiving files through icq?
is there any way to overcome this?

It's called NAT. Use google. Or read ICQ's site's help pages. For their purposes, they refer to using firewalls though NAT isn't truly a firewall.

got it!

in case anyone else read this and was wondering:

The way you get this to work is to go to Preferences - Connections - Firewall and set it for Socks 5. Then enter in the ip address for your router and port 1080. Then ICQ Preferences - Connections - Server. Set this to use firewall but not to use proxy. At the ICQ Preferences -Connections - User. Set this to use server proxy settings.

Then go into your router config program and in the Forwarding tab set port 1080 to be used by the ip address of whatever machine you want to use it on your lan. (for linksys routers its under the 'advanced' tab)

also, for everyone that uses AIM:

the newest beta version AIM allows file transfers through firewalls! u dont have to open any ports or set up forwarding, it'll work even if both computers are behind different firewalls.
