I belive this is the right forum.

Here's the deal, with the arrival of my new computer the one I am typing on will be moved upstairs.

While it isn't gaming material (reason I'm building a new computer) it's great for basic needs which is why my dad will be using it.

Now we currently have optimum online and don't want to change that, but we do want a high-speed internet on both computers.

So I belive what I'm looking for is called a router.

But that's about all I know.

Could someone give me a link to a good quality router at an affoardable price
 
The easiest way to accomplish this is to get a wireless router and a wireless network adapter for your dads computer. This page/site will help with products and other information about wireless networks.

Other members can help with product suggestion but personally i use a
Linksys WRT54GS (the wireless router) with a Linksys WUSB54GS for my dads computer (USB wireless network adapter) and a Linksys WPC54GS for my brothers notebook.
 
Hmm How can a PCMCIA Adaptor with a puny intrenal Antenna, that would end up stuck between the computer sase and the wall be great?

Not the best design, I know ... however I've installed quite a few of them & had no problems at all, so they do work & range with that model router is also very good... Belkin also makes a newer model that has a PCI card with the standard external antenna & claims 300mbs transfer rates instead of 108mbs, of course it costs more ($149 vs $89) & the couple I've used don't really seem to perform any better.

Linksys & D-Link also make MIMO routers that work very well if you don't like Belkin stuff, (I prefer the Linksys WRT300N) but I've had very good luck with Belkin equipment & they have never given me any problem honoring the lifetime warranty on the few failures that have occurred.
 
All this stuff on wireless, as if it's a must have and before the wireless era these problems were just unsolveable. Wireless is OK, but if you can run a wire instead, you can reduce costs, and get better reliability, security, and performance. Just an option.

No question about it... thats always my first choice!

 
It is a bus usually used to connect external devices. The ports are small rectangular, most pc's have at least 2.

The router should be fine, but I'd suggest going with the same brand USB adapter if possible, or better yet get him a PCI model instead... heres a couple options:

I would say get the first one cause it's cheaper and I'm sure that it'll work fine, but those who are proponents of getting the same brand, the second choice would be the better one.
 
I realy don't care about brands at all, as long as I buy quality, compatible components at an affoardable price I'm happy:thumbsup:
 
While different brands are supposed to work fine together (& often do) most of the time it will make your life easier if you stick to the same company for both router & adapter.
Also aside from having to open the case to install a PCI card, in my years of network installations, I've had a lot more trouble with USB adapters then PCI... I suggest you only go with USB if you arn't comfortable installing a PCI card.


Edit: Also of your two choices listed above, go with the Linksys all the way... again I'd snag the pci card instead.
