I just installed a router and now I cant play any games online. How can I fix this? IIm using the speedstream 2614 router. Also Im on ATTBI cable, and I installed the router myself. Plz help! Im going insane. Thx

Your router's firewall is probably blocking the traffic on the ports your games use. You need to find out what ports your games use and then open them on the router (the manual should tell you how).

Go to Manual and scroll down to Page 3-11

At the bottom it shows you a setting on your router called Virtual DMZ Host.

You need to set your computer up to be a static IP on the same network as your router. Then put that IP in the place where it says Virtual DMZ host.

You will then be allowed all incoming and outgoing packets.

WARNING: Read the warning that is explained on the manual. You may only want to do these steps when playing games and then remove your DMZ Host when you are done.

The Virtual DMZ thing should only be a last resort. Try the "Enable Virtual Server" (why can't they just call it port forwarding?) option first. It may not work with every game though.

What do you mean by "You need to set your computer up to be a static IP on the same network as your router"?
I set my static address is 12.233.217.xxx (assigned by ISP) and my lan address to 192.168.254.254. I did an ipconfig on the machine where I want to play games and the ip address is 192.168.254.157 and its gateway is 192.168.254.254. I put 192.168.254.157 for the virtual DMZ host. Is this what you mean because it still doesnt work. I can acces the internet fine from the computer but games are a no go.

Heisenberg is watching out for you Executor, but if you chose to do the DMZ router the Static IP I am talking about is on your gaming machine. IF you are doing ipconfig then you must be using WinNT, 2K, or XP.

You need to go into your gaming machine's IP configuration and turn off DHCP and select to specify IP.

You can use 192.168.254.157 it doesn't matter. Just as long as it is static. Then on the router select the same IP as you selected for your gaming machine as the Virtual DMZ address. This will allow all the gaming ports to make it to your machine without being blocked.. unfortunatly it will also allow unwanted traffic too so be careful.

Is there anyway to get around using the DMZ? How does ip forwarding work? Can you give me an example for q3 which runs on port 27960? Thanks

You have to do almost the same thing. First make your machines a fixed IP.

Then instead of putting your address in the virtual dmz area put it in the virtual server area and put the port number where it asks for it.

This should pass that port to your machine.

I don't know how your router works nor do I know how Quake3 handles its ports (whether it id dynamic or not) If it works great if not for a quick fix DMZ will work.

If you are just trying to run the games, then you should configure the special applications as per page 3-10 of your manual. What you want may even be in the drop box at the bottom of the screen.

If not you should first read the "How to Do it " and "Tips to create your mapped ports" sections here. Then you can find the ports used by popular apps and games here.

I know that for some games, you have to put the computer as DMZ when you need to get a list of servers/hosts. After getting the list, you can take the computer off DMZ. You can ping and get information (map, players, etc.) from the servers, but you won't be able to update the list without putting the computer on DMZ again.
