I have a mother-in-law that lives next door in a twin single that wants to move her computer from room to room every now and again. I currently have a 4 port wired router but now need to add her on to my connection. (Also my youngest is considering adding a laptop).

I am not a network guru, but I guess I need a real good router with both wired and wireless ethernet LAN connections that also has good signal strength for mama (has to go through 2 garages and perhaps down a long hall, 100 feet or so).

Any recommendations?

Also what can I expect to spend for the Router, a PCI card, and a PCMCIA card?

Thanks for any help.

Most consumer routers these days have both wireless and wired LAN capability, so you don't need to worry about that. Linksys WRT54GL or GS is good (not the v5). D-Link is fine too.

Your problem is going to be the distance - 100ft is extremely borderline for normal gear, so you might have to get some new antennas and maybe boost the power with custom firmware.

Do you game any? If you do, I reccomend the D-Link DGL 4300.
Nice router with a gigabit port, 802.11b/g, and LAN 4 ports.

Might try the Linksys WRT54GS. It has a four-port wired connection and wireless... it's also very easy to setup and use for non-techies.

Importantly, it's well supported with 3rd-party firmware and (once again), it's very easy to upgrade the firmware.

Why upgrade the firmware? If you need the extra range on the wireless, most consumer routers might not have the range by default, but custom firmware (which the Linksys is well supported by) allows you to boost the range.
