Router recommendation?

can anyone give me a recommendation on a decent router...I'm switching ISP's and I want to get my own router as I hear bad things about the one they provide (Arris Touchstone DG1670)...not a crazy expensive one with all the bells and whistles but just a solid performing one with excellent range...I have my TV, Blu-ray player and PS4 which I need to connect to the Gigabit ports and I have like 4 wireless devices (laptops, smartphones)...last time I used my own router was 5 years ago when I used the D-Link DIR-655 Extreme N Wireless Router which I liked

I just ordered an Archer C8 which is good wireless speed and gigabit ports on the back. I've seen a few recommendations for it... getting it for $70 refurbished (still 1yr warranty):

Do you not still have that router? If you do but are wanting AC speeds, then use that router and add a Ubiquiti Unifi AP AC Lite.

I'm getting 155/15...are D-Link and Linksys no longer considered among the best?...I'll look into the Archer C8

Is it possible to use your own modem? If so, here is a good deal on a modem and router combo. Make sure the modem is compatible with your ISP first.

BTW, I recommend using your own modem instead of any Arris modem.

just doing a Google search on the Arris DG1670 comes up with a ton of low scores and bad reviews...the DG1670 is the modem/router that Time Warner Cable and RCN (the company I'm switching to) use as their default Gateway modem/router and most of the time those aren't known for being of the highest quality

Is it possible to use your own modem?

according to my cable company I must use their modem but I can use my own router as a bridge...

In that case you definitely need a separate router to protect your local network. The TP-Link routers mentioned already are fine routers, but I still believe the Unifi AP (plus separate gigabit router with wireless disabled) would give you better range/coverage. A good used gigabit router can be had for less than $30 on craigslist/ebay if you were to go that route.

I like those...especially the TP-Link as I'd like to spend under $100...that one is also #2 on Amazon's best seller list...

I have the utmost respect for Jack but that same Asus router has been a problem child for me. It stops broadcasting the SSID and only a reboot will restore it. I've had numerous firmware versions on it from both Asus and Merlin. When I return to our primary residence next month I intend to RMA it and give a replacement a whirl but continue reading.

I have the N version at my secondary residence and I finally turned off the wireless and went with the Ubiquiti UniFi AP AC Lite that AnonymouseUser recommended for wireless. On my N version the wireless would cut out entirely and it would have to be rebooted. After the fourth or fifth time I decided enough was enough.

I generally love Asus products but the only thing good I can say about these two is that they have a 24 month warranty.
