Router Recommendation for LED Display

Hey all,

I am looking for a cost effective router to vertically mount inside an outdoor LED display (digital sign).

It will be installed inside the steel sign, so weather is not a problem... however, heat is.

It will be wired into a controller in the sign, and connected through WIFI to update content of the sign. This will be used at max, once a week... and usually only 1 or 2 times a month. The files transferred is less than 500MB, so speed is NOT an issue.

What I'm concerned about most is:

1. No dropped WIFI, and no need to reboot. I want to make sure I don't go up to the sign, open it up, hardwire, and reset the settings.
2. I need to make sure if the power is off for 24 hours, all the settings (security, IP) are still set up.
3. No problem with installing vertically
4. Range - Although not as important, the further the range, the better.

Right now, I'm looking at Linksys WRT54GL because it's the most solid router I've used and newegg agrees. I've had problems with D-LINK.

Any advice is always appreciated 🙄

Grab a couple Ubiquiti NanoStation M5s. Asa wireless bridge, these'll get you at least a couple miles range (depending on height) and they're dirt cheap.

They can also be powered off DC if that would make it easier to deploy. They're weather-tight, too, and can be mounted out doors.

Mounting a wireless device of any kind inside of a steel box will significantly cut down on your range and reliability. An outdoor bridge is your best bet.

Thank for the input.

If possible, I do not want an 'outdoor' solution, I want to try and keep the unit inside my sign for this application.

I've looked into EnGenius AP's (which i believe are similar to the NanoStaion's), but I need 3 RJ45 ports, and these only offer 2. This is why I would prefer the 'router' solution.

Are there any products out there that might fit what I'm looking for? Not "End-user routers"... maybe commercial routers housed in metal heat-sink/cases?

I pretty much need a small unit with 3 RJ45 ports, and WIFI capability to access via a laptop.
