I'm looking to get a Router but wanna make sure its what i need before getting it.

i'm wanting to use 4 or 5 PC's with only 1 IP.(maybe 2 IP if needed)

was wanting to know if a router will work so that all my PC's will have net access without a certain PC being on at all times.
and only having 1 IP?
(Cable modem - Roadrunner is my ISP)

and does it matter how many ports the router has?
since i have Hubs i can hook into the Router to give me more ports if possible.

So could i use like a 1 port Router, with an 8-Port Hub hooked into the router, and have all 5 PC's work fine?
(Looking for a cheap setup)

any info on this is would be appreciated.

I have all the NIC's,cables,Hubs etc.

so the Hub will go into the Router, then all PC's hook into the Hub?
not sure what you mean by setting IP's in Neighborhood.
i thought the Router gave the PC's the IP's auto?
didn't think i had to specify an IP for each one.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Linksys makes a 1 port, 4 port and an 8 port router.... You dont need the hub if your router has enough ports. I have the 8 port version hooked to roadrunner cable modem and five systems plugged in... Works great. 8 port was 179 as I recall. 4port about 149.

Router gets ip address from cable modem and then runs NAT on your local network. You only need 1 IP address from roadrunner. Addresses on your local network get assigned by DHCP running in router. You dont have to do anything but plug it it.

"So could i use like a 1 port Router, with an 8-Port Hub hooked into the router, and have all 5 PC's work fine?" -------> YES

What you will be missing with this config is the 'switch' capability of a multiport router. This function allows each port to run full speed with another port while a different port is talking to another port or the cable modem at full speed (what a sentence). The hub creates a single 'loop's worth of bandwidth that all 5 computers must share. Probably not a big deal.... but for 40 bucks..... YMMV

Netgear routers work well too. I had it connect to cable a while ago and went to DSL and its still running well. You can get the RT311 for a router without a switch, since you have a hub, etc.

You also might want to check out the SMC Barricade 4 port router, which you could plug a hub into. Check out the Hot Deals forum for some great prices at Amazon. This router also has a print server, so you can plug your printer into the router, and print from any computer on the network.

Thanks fellas.

anyone know where i can get one for around $50 to $60 some dollars?
not able to use my CC right now though.
all tapped out.

would have to be cash or trade.

and would a Hub slow all my PC's down pretty bad?
or really not noticable?

I set my Internet connection up the following:
DSL MODEM > 5 Port Switch > Router > 8 port Hub
The reason for the 5 port switch is that there are just sometimes that a router won't let you connect properly. An example is the VPN connection for my work. Since my DSL MODEM is limited to 10Mbit, using a hub has no affect for the internet connection, but it may have an affect with system to system transfers. But since the hub is a 10/100, I don't see any slow down.
I've currently got 5 systems on my network, 1 of them is connected before and after the router(VPN for work).
