Router problem?

I've been having. Intermittent connectivity problems lately so I called tech support to have a visit done. When they checked my signal via remote they said that they could tell the router is going bad. Is it really that easy to see that? Also my router is also a 3g gsm hotspot with sim card, are these still available?

What kind of connectivity problems?

There is a TCP/IP protocol called Telnet, which can be used to access remotely routers and other devices. It's possible they Telneted (yes, that's a proper term) your router, to check the configuration, ROM, NVRAM, etc.

Losing packets, unable to access some sites, slow to access, extended time required to buffer, buffering often etc...

if its your own router that they never setup then most likely they did not directly diagnose it remotely. Usually they try to cross off any other problems like the line coming to your house and your modem. If both of those seem fine they will say its probably your router.

Cradlepoint makes routers that support various mobile internet devices, but you still have to get the mobile internet device separately from att, sprint, verizon, etc

That's why I want to know, its not one that came from them and id be rather pissed if they just went down some stupid checklist and claimed it the router before sending someone out.

It may be simpler to have some basic QoS, if you want VoIP, Web and e-mail. Most consumer routers have a function for basic QoS settings.
