Router Problem

I'm sure you guys get a lot of these on here so I'll try to keep it as short and to the point as possible.

I have two computers hooked up to my 4 Port Netgear Router running my Cox Cable Modem. Naturally, I like to download a torrent here or there. So there are a few problems. First off, prior to having the router I used to dload torrents and they'd run until I shut them off at rates on average of 100 KB/S.

Now since I hooked up the router, I am losing A LOT of speed, averaging roughly 20 KB/S. It wouldn't be such a huge problem if the downloads went until I shut them off but that's not the case. They typically run for about 1 hour and then, my internet just shuts off and I have to reset my router. This is a problem because I like to leave multiple torrents on overnight but they don't work now.

Any help is appreciated and keep in mind that the torrents that I download are all legal, so no need to worry.

Try these:
1. reset router to factory default and start over.
2. upgrade or downgrade firmware
3. Get another router (non-Netgear brand) from a store that allows you to return w/o restocking fee. If that router works fine, return your Netgear or see if you can get an RMA for it. Or you can just ditch it cause SOHO routers are so cheap nowadays.

you need to forward the ports bittorrent uses to your PC, usually 6881-6889 unless you are using custom ports

Also, a lot of routers choke on bittorrent. See if there is a firmware upgrade, or some hacked firmware out there for it.

I tried that and it killed my connection, it took me 10 secs just to connect to a normal webpage.

Possibly anything else within the Router Configuration that I could change or are the ports the only thing that you would change?

That probably means its working properly! see if you can throttle you upstream and downstream. Bittorrent will take it ALL if it can, and make simple things like browsing the internet take forever. My max downstream is around 360kbps and up is around 33kbps, so i tell azureus to max at 300 down and 20 up.

So far it seems to be working. I'm downloading at a consistent 50 KB/s, which is fine with me. I got some new firmware and that seems to be helping. The forwarding the ports still didn't work as it killed the downloads and anything else I was connected to the internet on. Let's just hope I can leave the computer on overnight and it will be fine and not stop downloading or have the internet die.

Thanks for everyone's help and especially Joe.
