Router Problem - only detects machines with aftermarket ethernet card =/

Ok, I posted this same problem a while ago during Christmas time. The problem I had was that my router at home suddenly stopped working for my laptop, none of my settings were changed and the only thing else that was different was that I changed from RoadRunner to SBC DSL. Additionally during that time I brought home my college desktop and tried plugging that in. So I had 3 computers to fool around with and I didn't have time to fully test everything and every configuration. People were telling me to uninstall the SBC software from my comps cuz that stuff just screws things up, or to make sure I had dynamic IP addressing on, or to check my DNS stuff, or to check my router settings, etc.

I didn't think any of these were the problem because both my laptop and my desktop from college have built in lan ports on their mobos, but the old dell that was still at my house had a separate ethernet card plugged into one of the pci slots. After fooling around all the freaking settings on all the computers, comparing all the IP's and DNS's and Gateway's, and after multiple direct input testing straight from the cable modem itself, and after buying a NEW ROUTER. The ony conclusion is that for some godforsaken reason, the network in my house will only work if the computers connected to it are using a separate (aftermarket) ethernet card.

Has this happened to anyone else?!?! Does anyone know what the hell is going??? I really don't understand why this would be becuase both the laptop and my desktop work fine on and off campus networks. My gf also has the same problem with her laptop at her house too, but this doesn't seem to make sense to me cuz there shouldn't be a difference between a built-in lan port and a pci one.... AND my laptop USED to work on my house network using the built-in ethernet port.

Someone please explain this to me! 😕

dude, you need to be more clear on what you are asking

for one, you are drawing a weird conclusion that isnt making any sense
ethernet is ethernet, a card being 'aftermarket' has nothing to do with anything, unless your drivers are screwed up. you SHOULD uninstall the SBC software.

there is a 10000 things that could be wrong, but you havnt given any clues to narrow it down, try telling us if you have DHCP on, if the cards are pulling an address or not, if they can ping the router....etc etc

maybe i should be more clear in what i've already done- i did uninstall all the sbc software from EVERY computer. every computer can see the router (ping the router), every computer is getting an IP address and Gateway from the router (all these numbers are the same, i am using the same port on the router and just switching the computers), all have auto detect config for both DNS and IP, no computers are getting a DNS entry or DHCP. all these are irrespective of if the computer being able to get through to the internet or not.

next, i have checked all the configurations for the computers, except the dell computer which is running windows 98, the configs are all the same.

now, the reason why i say it'll only run with an aftermarket ethernet card is because my desktop that i use at college, works at college with the built-in lan and doesn't work with the internet at my house. however, it WILL work WITHOUT any settings being changed OR WITHOUT any drivers being installed if i PULL the ethernet card from the dell and pop it in my desktop. i mean literally, i have to do NOTHING but just pull the card out and pop it in the computer, and it will work just fine. this also holds true for my laptop, i just got a PCMCIA network card and the now the laptop works fine without having to adjust any settings whatsoever.

i know an ethernet port built on the mobo should have no difference to one that's bought and put in the pci slot- i KNOW this. but i'm just telling you what i'm seeing and i'm friggin confused. this makes no sense to me, and i wish anandtech didn't erase threads, cuz my previous one had all the data about this topic.

anyways, if anyone wants to help me debug this, let me know. i'm off to college right now, but i still really want to figure out what's going on. :|
