router password

I have a netgear RT311 router. The password was set years ago, and if anybody even bothered to right it down its gone now. I have tried the default pw of 1234. Is there any way to manually reset the password?

Yup.... You need to do a hardware reset of the router. There should be a recessed button in a hole where you can insert a pen tip or large paper clip (straightened) and press while poweron or while powering up... Consult the Netgear website before hand.

You WILL lose any settings that the router has stored for your ISP....... Make sure you have those ready to re-apply to the router if needed.

On the AOpen a HW reset (the button) was all it took.

that is for Linksys routers but maybe it will work ....

I am very surprised that no hard reset switch is on the router.

the default for that router is:
name: admin
pass: 1234

i noticed in your post you said you tried pass 1234, but you didnt mention what user name

never thought id need a serial able again..

i got it reset.. awful lot of work for a single port router.. works good tho

would there be an advantage to replacing it with a new piece?

I hope that doesn't work for any router. That would be an extremely insecure system. I personally would consider my RT314 broken if it allowed that and return it. The only way that you should be able to circumvent the password by design is if you actually have physical access to the hardware.

Not really, unless you wanted to get a model with a firewall and/or wireless. I replaced a couple of POS Linksys routers before I got my Netgear RT314, which has been working great for over 2 yrs. I'm going to hang onto this one until I go wireless. Glad you got that working.

i have an 8port switch plugged into it, and a wireless access point.
Was all wireless, but had to add some wires to gain back enough speed/reliability for moving large database type files(also helps with ping in quake). The wireless is now mainly going to be for laptops and computers that are too difficult to reach with cables.

It has a firewall. I dont setup mac addresses or anything like that tho.

I have a pile of network stuff that I know could all be replaced with a single unit, but I dont care about that so much.

i believe its the same thing as your rt314, minus 3 ports.

I have been using an RT314 for over 3 years now. (314 is same as 311 but has 4 port switch)

There is no reason to upgrade, unless you need Gigabit LAN or something like that.

Coincidentally, I had a similar problem last year after a firmware upgrade. Had to go out and buy a serial cable for $6 to fix it.
