new wifi laptop on the way and am contemplating between a ap or new router? my current lan works fine and i really don't want to mess with a new router, but if they are better than a ap i will. i would rather just plug in a ap to the network and go with that. are there any benefits either way?

you can turn a router into just an AP, I would get whatever supports the features you want at the lowest price.

is there any one that is better than the other? i have read about some of the linksys ones having the ability to use modified firmware, is this advantageous?

I don't know. I have a cheapy (can't even tell you the brand, lol) at home that I almost never use (never turn radio on) and I use Cisco 1231's at work, which is most likely overkill for your house :D
