Router not working with cable

I recently switched over to Comcast cable after having over 3 years of DSL.
The problem is, after I installed the modem, the direct link wouldn't work. So I put it through my router and it worked just fine for almost a month. Then yesterday I wake up and find out my net is down. After about an hour of fiddling around, I decided to do a direct connection to my computer. To my surprise, it worked.
Now the problem is that I do need a router for my computer and every time I put my modem through my router I get a DNS error when looking up the problem in network sharing center( I have Vista). There's a red X between my network and the internet.

So what's the problem? Could it have something to do with my IP address, or am I going to have to buy a new router?

Have you tried doing a hard reset on the router to set everything back to the default settings? Then you should be able to just plug it in and go.

If you're connected through the router, can you access the router's own config page or can you not even get to that?

I'd reset the router and make sure your PC is set to DHCP and see what happens.
