Router Login

I downloaded Azureus and it was really slow (0.4KB/s). So I did some searching on Google and found out I need to use Port Forwarding. I then went and did some more Google and found this guide. Now my problem is I have a Netgear MR814v2 router and when I type 192.168.0.1 into my browser it asks me for my User Name and Password which I don?t know. I tried just using blank, admin and password none of which works is there a way I can find out my Login information?

leave the username blank and for the pass type in "admin" with out the quotation marks

Most routers have a default setting, might be Administrator and blank, or Admin and password, or some such combination. I would go to Netgear's site and look for the product documentation.

If you still can't get in, hold down the reset button on the router for like 10 secs, which will reset it. Then your login should be "admin" (no quotes) with a blank password.

I've tried every combo with admin, administrator, password and just leaving it blank no luck so far.
The product documentation was worthless.
I'm going to try the product support page if that doesn't work I'm going to reset it.

Edit: I found this on Netgear's site. The default login doesn't work I guess I'm going to have to reset my router.
Will resetting my router mess anything up?
Is there anything I should do before resetting it? Or after for that matter?

No, but you'll lose all 'custom' configuration changes that have been made to the router. However if you've never changed anything then it's not a big deal.

After you reset it be sure to change the default login password and write it down for future reference.

I wasn't the one who set it up. So will it work or will I have to fiddle with it after I reset it?
And I think I will keep the default password so I can just get it off Netgear's site if I need it later.

If you reset it then it will be back at factory defaults. What you will lose are: any static IP assignments; any custom firewall rules (filters, timed lockouts, site lockouts, special app settings), and anything else that was input after the router was set up.

Some routers, like my dlink, default to 'admin' for both the user name and password.

I really don?t what to have to reset the router and know that I think about it when I?m downloading a Torrent I don?t play Xbox Live (The only thing I have on the router besides this computer) so could I just unplug my router and send the connection strait to this PC? And if so what else would I have to do to set it up?

The path of least resistance will be to reset the router, in the end. Your modem is probably holding its single IP address for the device with MAC address such-&-such, currently your router. If you were to plug your computer or XBox into the modem directly, you'd probably have to reset the modem to get an IP address, since your computer's MAC address and your XBox MAC address are different than your router's MAC address (MAC addresses are like fingerprints, no two are supposed to be alike, even on two of the same product from the same company).

Before you reset your router, have your ISP's paperwork on hand with info you might need. It's usually all on there.

Also (duh) the router provides protection against worms and hackers. If you take out that layer of defense, make sure your system has Automatic Updates enabled and that it has a software firewall running all the time.

If the router literally won't turn on, then it's time for a new router. No, you don't need to disconnect it from anything first, just press & hold the recessed Reset button until it resets (~10 seconds or so).

That?s exactly what I did and now it?s not responding at all.
I guess I need a new router, any recommendations on a replacement?

BTW when you say "not responding," what exactly is it doing? Are its LED lights lighting up? Or is it completely dead to the world as if it had no electrical power?

well, duh, then the last owner probably set a password... if someone has 'set it up' then ask that person how he got into it.

Call Netgear and RMA the router.

As soon as you tell them it won't power on they can't ask you to do any additional troubleshooting. I RMA'ed a 614 about a month ago and it took roughly 1 week to receive a replacement. I think they offer cross-shipping as well.

I?m afraid I?m past the ninety day warranty.
I?m looking at the Linksys BEFSR41. It looks pretty good but I know some routers are better then others at handling Torrent?s, is the Linksys good and what are some good routers for running Torrent?s off of?

The warranty should be 1 to 3 yrs. fom the date of purchase.
