hi guys i have a couple problems

to any specific server for any game i cant get below 50ms (even if its in a city 20 freaking minutes away), and when i ping my router i usually get the following results:

Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes =32 time =2ms TTL=150
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes =32 time =20ms TTL=150
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes =32 time =16ms TTL=150
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes =32 time =<1ms TTL=150
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes =32 time =21ms TTL=150
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes =32 time =8ms TTL=150
... and so on with the spiking.

im using a linksys BEFSR41v4. what should i do, RMA it or should i get a new CAT cable?

very frustrated, thanks for any input

Try a different port on the router, then try a different cable. If that doesn't help, it might be the router or your nic.

you need to remember that even though you are only twenty minutes away, the route that your path takes may be long, going through several routers along the way.

to better help you trouble shoot, go to the command line and do a tracert "destination ip or web address"

well, an interesting thing happened. i was reformatting my comp upstairs (the one that had the spiky results), and when i come to my sisters' old e-machine, lo and behold the same ping test returns <1ms returns for the router. so im checking the nic card and cable, those SHOULD be the only two explanations, right?

He's just pinging his router and getting those results. There is something going on with his home network.

Most likely.

I'd start with the cable.
