Router Gurus: Which one of these is better and why?

I like Netgear products. They have served me and those I've set up with Netgear stuff, very well.

My old router is a Netgear RT314. The schiznit in it's day, but it's day is long gone. Last firmware update was 2001! It doesn't do SPI or other new, good stuff.

I'm looking at two other Netgear products and for the life of me, I can't figure out what the diff is, besides the price. Please help me out.

Oh, it'll be used for a SOHO/online gaming type setup...i.e. my house. 😀

Thanks.

FVS-318

or

FVS-328

-none VS. Built-in serial port for dial-up access
Initiates up to 8 IPSec VPN tunnels simultaneously VS. - Up to 50 simultaneous IPSec VPN tunnels

Do you need a serial port for an external modem ? Do you need 50 VPN connections ?

Thanks, AMDfanboy.

Nope. Don't need the serial modem.
Nope. Don't need 50 simultaneous VPN connections.

That's the only diff? Big diff in price for not that much more, huh?

Well, if you needed a router with 50 VPN connections, thats not a bad price. If you don't, thats a rip off.

I personally have a Netgear 318 router. They work very well. The firewall does a good job catching intrusions and suspicious traffic. You can set the log to be e-mailed to you at various times. You can even have the router talk to a syslog demon.

The down site to it is the VPN configuration. Good luck trying to get the windows builtin dialer to work with it. I have yet to find anyone that has gotten this to work. It works great with other dialers, but be prepared to buy a dialer program if you need the VPN (unless its a router to router connection, which also works great).

A piece of advice if you do get the 318, upgrade the firmware. It gives you a lot more VPN options (including AES encryption).

Thanks much guys. I appreciate the advice/testimonial, PurdueTech. 🙂

I actually don't need any VPN connections right now. I just want a good piece of equipment that wont' be obsolete in a year.

I just installed an RP614 V.2 (Netgear) for a friend and I like it a lot. However...this may sound dumb, but I don't care for the new "hi-tech" silver plastic case look. It looks cheesy. I know that it's the guts and their capabilities that count, though.

I like the big, solid, heavy, "ugly" blue-metal Netgear cases. They look and feel more substantial. Plus, there's got to be a reason there's a $70 or so price diff b/t a 614 and a 328! There's the VPN, etc.

So, the 318 is looking pretty good then. Any other opinions/advice?

The VPN is only part of the equation or backup serial port. There is a huge diff in hw in the routers. The ? is what you need or want. There are many differences in specs. FVS328 is a very nice router for the bucks.

FVS318 ----------------------------- FVS328
FW throughput: 6.3Mbps vs 50Mbps
3DES Throughput:720Kbps vs 15Mbps
Proc: 50mhz ARM 7(no coprocessor) vs 150mhzBrecis MSP2000

Hey CuriousGeorge, thanks for the reply 🙂

I guess I didn't read the specs closely enough. 😱

This is going to be used at home with three, maybe four people accessing the internet at the same time. Will be a Webserver and an FTP box attached as well; SOHO type environment. My DL/UL speeds will be a big limiting factor on throughput, I know that much.

I'm not real smart on these things...I know the basics. There's a handy diff in price b/t the two. For my use, what do you suggest?

Thank you. 🙂

First whether you use DSL or CABLE is significant. If you are not using VPN the 318 would probably do fine. Depending on how much webserver or ftp usage you get you may notice the 328 more robust features. You have to really decide what the diff is worth to you. It is about a $60 dollar difference which over time is nothing, IMO. If you have poor bandwidth you may want all the processor you can get.
