Router/file sharing question

I have 2 PC's with Win98SE sharing an @home cable modem through a SMC router.
Should my 2 PC's be able to see each other in the Network neighborhood?
I want to be able to access the CD-Rom of 1 PC from the other. Is this possible?
I have file and printer sharing enabled, but I still dont see the other PC from either PC.

Any suggestions???
 
Yes. That should work. I have a Barricade, @home, 3 cpus...network neighborhood shows them all. Did you have these 2 machines networked before @home, or is this the first try?

Check control panel/network/identification for each computer. Make sure the workgroups are the same. Lots of other things to double check also. Maybe you could tell more how you have the IP addresses configured.
 
For Win98SE

Make sure that you log on as Client for Microsoft Network.

There are three places to be checked for sharing,

The first two are in Control Panel, Network.

1. TCP/IP (or any other protocol that you are using for sharing) In the properties of the protocol it has to be bound to Client for Microsoft Network, and Sharing is Checked.

2. The general File and Print Sharing have to checked.

The third: In My Computer, individual Drive or/and printer has to be shared.

CD-ROM can be shared (from Network point of view it is just another drive.)

Double click on My Computer, right click on the Drive Letter of the CD-ROM, choose properties, Sharing, and check the Sharing.
