Router connectivity issues

Whenever I connected my router to my computer and try to surf the web. The router disconnects me from the internet every few seconds and all of a sudden the internet works for a few seconds...then goes back on not working . So I go under network connections to see what's wrong, so I check the lac connection it says "connected" for a few seconds and goes to "accessing network address" (which disconnects me from the web) for another few. It's basically a back and forth problem. So I just connected my cable modem straight to the computer and here I am asking for help.
I have a netgear fvs318 router with the latest firmware.

assign a static IP to your computer, to see if it's a DHCP issue on the router. I would also disable DHCP on it.
