Have this problem that started about 3 nights ago.

While playing games Online,i noticed my pings have jumped from around 40 to 120 in all servers that use to stay around 35-50.

This seemed to have happened after my ISP came back up after a Tech problem they said they had. (3 nights ago)

Now anytime that i hook more then 1 PC up to my Router,it drops my speeds from 3M/500,to about 1.5/200 (Download/Upload).

But if i hook 1 PC up at a time, whether it be straight into the Cable Modem,or into the Router,it runs perfect.

And i also noticed that since this all happened,my Activity light on my Cable Modem will stay lit almost constant.without no blinking like it use to before all this happened.

So was hoping maybe someone could let me know what the problem may be.
Could it be the Router?or perhaps the Cable Modem is faulty?
This setup has worked fine for months with no problems.

And all tests were done with 1 PC being used at a time. (ei: all PC's was idle except for one while testing)

Specs:

RR Cable
SMC Barricade 4-Port Router (Wired) SMC7004BR
10/100 NIC's in all PC's
Motorolla SurfBoard 4200 Cable Modem

Update: I contacted RR today, and they said they have been experiencing CPU Overload through the week.but seems that would make 1 PC run just as slow - And in my case,it only happens when 2 or more are hooked up

Thanks for any help.

Do any of the three PC's alone work at full speed? Did you try each one?

Possible worm on one of them taking up packets with pings?

Turtle,

The main 2 i have been trying together have not been scanned yet for any kind of virus.
Now that i think of it,i did have to enable DMZ on 1 of my machines for a couple hours for netmeeting.
I'll be sure to do a scan on the 2 PC's tonight.

But, i did try each PC hooked up straight to the Cable Modem alone and everything ran fine.
Except for the 1st or 2nd try on my main PC,my tests were half the speed.
but then on my last test with it,it was at full strength.

I'll be sure to scan for a virus.

Turtle,

I did a scan tonight and guess what.....4 of the systems had a Virus.
All of them had a "malware.nachi.A" or some sort.

After removing them one by one..i got to the last system that had it...and Boom!...my Activity light when completely out.

Rebooted the systems and the Activity light finally wasn't a constant orange anymore.
it was started to flash every now and then like before.

I then went to check the speeds and sure enough...All of them was back to normal!

Thanks man!...That was the problem all this time.

It must have happened when i set 2 of my PC's into DMZ mode for a couple hours for netmeeting.

But seems everything is all fine now.

I would like to find some info on that Virus however.
i couldn't remember the exact name o fit,but seems Malware comes in Emails that i've read up on.

I owe you one. :)

Thanks big time.

No problem. I just fixed that exact problem on a corporate LAN. It was driving me crazy because it coincided with an ISP change and a different router and I was thrown off - thought it must have to do with the new router. You're actually the first person I think I've helped on this board. I've been helped about 100 times - not with direct answers but reading other answers that put me on the right track of things.

Make sure you patch them, too. Windows update will do it, but there is a specific fix if you just want to apply it.

patch closing hole for this worm

Yeah i just finished going through all 4 systems here and updating that exact patch.
Seems i had the other patch installed on all of them. (The one for the MSBLAST)

The other 2 Systems here wasn't infected with any however. (Win98SE Machines)

Right now everything is cruising along. :)

Thanks again for the quick fix.
I thought for sure i had some bad Hardware.
