I have a Netgear router, model RP614v2. It works fine. However, the Netgear website says it has been discontinued, and is not supported in Vista. If I don't want to change it's settings, can I still use it after I switch from XP to Vista?

I'm quite sure it'll still work just fine in Vista.

I could be wrong though; networking gurus are welcome to explain why it wouldn't still work if that's the case.

If, it doesn't work, highly unlikely though, just get some cheap router and flash DD-WRT on there. But I think Vista-compatible, just means that Vista is capable of detecting the router (at least on my laptop) and do something with it (I didn't look too much into it considering my network is already set up)

Like zerogear said, I think "not compatible" simply means that it won't be detected in Network Neighborhood/My Network Places (or whatever it's called) in Vista. Which really isn't a problem whatsoever - you can still connect to the router's interface by IP address.

Also, you may want to look into updating the router's firmware. Even though it's discontinued, they may have published an update to the firmware that you haven't applied yet. Good luck!

Actually, Vista has a newly written TCP/IP stack that certain routers can't handle. If your router has Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) enabled, you might be able to ping the outside world but get "404 Page Not Found" from your web browser, or have random disconnects. For some users, disabling IP V6 alleviates the problem, though it's not an official solution.

It will work just fine so don't change anything.
