Quick question:

I just bought a router with a firewall built in obviously. Do I still need a software firewall on my computer like Internet Security?

Probably not, but I use both just because I like the extra security. Your router won't block outgoing connections. The right software firewall, such as Zone Alarm, will.

A real firewall would have that ability. A SOHO/consumer level router does not.

what router did you buy? we'll tell you if it has a firewall or not.

QUIT CALLING THESE SOHO BOXES ROUTERS AND FIREWALLS. THEY ARE NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

they don't route anything and they sure as heck cannot in the loosest sense of the word be called firewalls. pretty good marketing though.

sorry, blowin off steam.

Spidey,

The problem is that if we started calling them Gateways, we'd be constantly explaining what we were discussing.

In English....

Basically, the router acts as a hardware firewall. When you establish an Internet connection,
your request for information, surfing, has a leading and a trailing packet assigned to it by your
system. You router checks every packet coming into your computer for these packets. Bogus
packet, not from your computer, are ignored ( outside hackers trying to get in ). Surfing the net, you may become infective. Software will be installed on your PC w/out you knowledge. It will transmit information from your pc to whoever created the virus. Thus, it has the correct
packets and passes thru your firewall.

The additional software < BlackIce,... > flags you when your PC trying to sending packets from applications not authorized to do so.

Okay.

Long winded.
