Router affecting streaming video?

I've noticed that when I have my cable modem hooked up to my Netgear router, streaming video seems to need to be rebuffered a lot by Windows Media Player. I took the router off and the streaming video only had to be buffered once. Is there some setting that my be causing this? Thanks.
 
Which router? Dlink had a model that had a video streaming problem which was fixed via a firmware update.
