Router about dead, should I buy a new one

As stated my router is on its last legs and after years (4) of great service I have decide to retire the befsr41.
Now my question is shouls I buy one of them snifty new routers or turn one of my many (4) old comuters laying around into a router? The computers range from a couple socket 754 (3200's) and a couple p4's (2.8/533, 2.5/celly) all with about a gig of ram and onboard nics. All runnng XP Pro.
My home network consist of 5 computers all with wired gigabit nics (either onboard or card type) and 2 network printers (1 inkjet, 1 4200N laser) all conect to a dlink gigabit switch.
The network is mainly used for gaming. 2 wow players and I myself play online FPS's. All computers running XP Pro

Some people say I would be better off with the new dlink gaming router others say a old puter would do a much better job.

So I thought I would ask the experts here for the real answer.

TIA
Scoob

P.S. if its an old puter are there any website write ups that would walk somebody through setting up a network with just a puter as a router?

Honestly, using a computer would be more "powerful" but expect a very large increase in your electric bill from it. My personal opinion, just get a new SOHO router. The ones I recommend are either the WRT54GL by linksys, the Asus WL-520GU or something with more memory and runs better is the Asus WL-500 G Premium v2. I have the Asus WL-500 G Premium 2 and most of the time I forget it's even there. 45 days since my last reboot and it has NEVER locked up on me or stopped working.

Thanks for your input kevnich2 but I have no need for anything wirelss. Everything is hard wired to a gigabit switch.

Well with this atleast you'll have the option for wireless but even putting that aside, you can disable the wireless if your truly against it. The router itself runs great though.

I see, thank you. I thought there might be a better option if I had no use for the wireless.

I don't think you're going to find much of anything without wireless. No demand.

Routers do not "wear out".

Cisco 871 will handle your load. Learn IOS and you've got a decent career skill.
