In response to the OP's added question, I never use the expression "Route 9". It's Highway 9 or Interstate 9 or just I-9.

yeah, but whenever I see "route" my brain just cannot say 'root'. I understand your distinction though.

It's like asking a canadian to say "about", it always gives me a chuckle.
