what's the cheapest place to get 24" and 36" rounded cables? besides buy.com, buy kills me with shipping and tax. heh.

i have a antec sx830 and normal length cables cant get the top two 5.25 spaces at the same time.

Newegg has ATA-100 24" round cables in different colors (sorry, can't figure out the link code).

From my experience the CPU utilization went from 4% with flat to 30% with round using HDTach, the transfer rates remained the same. So instead of debating test it for yourself, some round cables will have no problems but some poorly constructed ones will give you problems that you may not even notice.

pcmods.com is a great place to buy any modifications parts for your pc. some prices are good, but their selection and great reputation separates them from the rest. i just received from them last night a lian-li pc60 side door with window cut, a window, a blue cathode light, and a few white rounded ide/floppy cables. they have the rounded cables in many different colors.

i'll be finishing my computer this weekend, if anyone is interested in pictures.

Hey, my $.02

This only applies to my system....my setup....my environment.

On a Maxtor 30GB, IBM 75GXP 45GB, and a IBM 60GXP 60GB, I noticed about a 2-5% drop in throughput.

I used two different ATA-100 flat cables (came with the IBM Drives), and 3 different rounded cables (borrowed from friends). I used HD-Tach and ran it at least twice for each config....more if there was any difference.

The rounded cables were not-homemade...nice n' pretty colors.

Rounded cables aren't worth it in my opinion. And ATA-100 cables are stiff enough so you could fold them side ways so that they don't restrict airflow. Also, doesn't plastic hold heat longer as well? Maybe if you had a window in your pc, it might be worth it.

If it is a problem that you don't notice, then, is it in fact really a problem??????
😕

Keep in mind that rounded cables are not good for just providing better air flow, but they are aesthetically pleasing which is important to those of us who have windows on the side of our cases to showcase the insides of the computer.

A year or so ago someone posted a rounded cable deal in this forum. Someone asked as usual about performance issues.
Another member pointed anyone who wanted to look to a post by a Drive Engineer from western digital from an email or a forum.
He pointed out in a few words he did not believe there was a problem with EIDE cables in a rounded configuration.
I'm sorry i don't have his post handy. But since that time i've been using rounded cables with no performance losses as far as i can tell.
"no bad files etc" I'm running 80 gigs in raid 0 I haven't done a test in a long while but performance was above average.

i second pcmods.com. great store, good service, and awesome prices. plycon is too expensive and the other guys i don't trust.

I received my cables today and man are they SWEET! For anyone with a SuperMicro 750A case, these are a necessity.

(say this in a fake Austrailian accent- )

The round cable ate my baby!

See, stupid huh?

Um, ok. I'll take my meds now.

what color are they? thanks...

They came in Grey color only I believe. I ordered on Saturday morning and received my package on Monday morning via UPS ground shipped from Irvine...
It's really sucks has to pay tax and shipping everytime I bought something from buy.com, newegg and mwave...

Actually I would prefer rounded if I could afford to spend more money. The flat cables are so dang annoying when working inside your computer. Seems like they are always in the way. But its not something someone really needs.

the cables i have are twisted pair ribbon cabling. it's the same type as the twisted pair laminated SCSI cables without the lamination. the twisted pair is great for exactly what has been said, to reduce crosstalk due to induction caused by changes to the EM field. of course since the pairs are bundled up together, this produces a flaw which is the difference between CAT5 and CAT6 wiring standards, the latter isolating each pair in a jacket. this bundling cancels some of the positive effects of having twisted pair cabling, but it's better than cutting up a flat cable and bundling it. especially since those 80wire cables are a bitch to work with.

personally, both types of cabling are annoying to work with. flat or round, having 80 wires is just takes a lot of space...

<------ gonna be an early adopter of serial ATA.

if you want optimal performance, get one of those rounded twisted pair cables, remove the jacketing, isolate each pair with a jacket, and shield the damn thing. of course this would produce a hell of a mess of cable-age. =P
