I've been scared to use rounded cables.
Is it not worth it to get the rounded cables with the extra shielding and ground wire?

Is there any advantage to these over 80 wire flat IDE cables other than less resistance to air flow within the case (i.e. cooling issues)?

Looks like the 24 inch cables aren't showing the awesome pricing anymore, too bad I only really need 36 inch cables anyway which I can get for $7.95 locally with no shipping, and sometimes 3.95 if they have the flat ones in stock.

I did however pick up 10 of those little surge protectors, 17.04 after shipping and coupon etc. For that price you can use them anywhere you have something plugged in worth more than a couple bucks, also 6 outlets is always handy. One thing I was wondering looking at those, are they wide enough to take your typical "block" plugin (for things like cell phone chargers/cable modem power supplies/etc/etc). Looks like they may be a bit narrow especially for the larger block type power plugs but hey, at $1.70 each I'll still bite

The advantage to me over flat is easier routing and less chance of getting a wire cut or the insulation scraped off by case edges. And for $1, I'll buy a few.

Would that keyboard have a nice touch/feel? Would the mouse be like the Intellimouse Explorer (mine has 4 buttons besides the scroll wheel)?

I've been using the MS ergonomic keyboard (wired connection to PC) for years and like it. Would be nice to have wireless, though, especially for the mouse.

no thats not the set with the explorer mouse that one is much more expencive


I have the same set up but i have the standard keyboard and i wouldnt trade the wireless for any thing. Batt life sucks but after i get abit more cash im getting the Blue tooth model

Could somebody elaborate? This means rounded cables can have problems? What problems? To WHAT is this referring?

These cables feature the grounds and signal pins twisted into pairs, so signal loss isn't likely to be a problem. As far as routing goes, unless you're shoving it into a mail slot, that's not going to be a problem.

Most every other cable in the world has all the wires bundled together to make a more "round" cable. Why would round IDE cables work any different than flat ones? Seems they'd be more durable as well.

I thought most here knew the possibility of problems with round cables. This explains it some.
There are some websites with tests somewhere showing speed reduction with round cables. But don't think I saw any tests done after the newer expensive cables came out with the extra sheilding and grounding strap like the Antec Cobra and IOSS RD3 Gladiator to see if they completely eliminated any potential problems. And Demon-Xanth, I was talking about these later types. Were you?

So, is there a utility that will allow you to, say *test* the data integrity while using rounded cables to ensure you're not getting signal degradation and such?
