Rounded IDE Cable Sleeves

Had to get a new IDE hard drive today, and decided to get roundies to go with it since working with ribbons was such a pain. It's my first time with them, and they seem to be great EXCEPT for the movable sleeves at the ends. I ended up exacto-ing them off since they took up more space than ribbons, and got in the way. Has anyone else had to cut them off? Or is there a good reason I shouldn't have?
