Rounded cables ...

My hard disks files have been getting corrupted like no other and I'm thinking it may be the rounded cables I got from SVC as everything in my PC has changed.

I wanna know what everyone's thoughts are.

I've had no problems, but so far I've only used single device cables of 18" or less. Be sure to get ones with pull-tabs, so you won't have to pull on the cables themselves when trying to disconnect them.

I've actually had this as a problem on at least one occasion. You have probably already done this but check each individual "strand" if you will where the cable spreads back out and joins the plug housing on both ends....if any of those wires are cut, bent awkwardly, broken, etc., then this may be your cause. It would be a simple check to swap your rounded cable with a standard ribbon cable for a few days/a week and see if the problem goes away....

Is it bad to bend regular straight cables to get them to fit? One of my motherboards has very awkwardly placed IDE connectors and to get the hard drives connected, I have to fold the IDE cable over itself in a couple of cases. Would this cause problems too?

Most people have to origami their flat cables to make them neat, just don't crimp the folds too sharply as you could break the conductors. I use double sided foam tape or a stripe of hot glue (on the low heat setting of my glue gun) to hold the folds together. Either can be fairly easily removed if changes become necessary.

The crashes happen like every 3 months or so and running flats for 3 months full of info and losing it after is really crappy for my music collection -_- but I do appreciate everyone's replies. Learning something new each day hehe

Yes, rounded cables are worse. Even if it isn't the truly idiotic type that splices the IDE cable into individual strands, the folding and rolling increases crosstalk between signal wires drastically. Also, many of them are way longer than the allowed 45 cm (about 18").

I use all rounded cables, no problems here.

I've been using round cables for about 4 years now,no problems at all,FYI longest round cable I have installed is 24".

I tried folding a flat one and zip tieing it then it stopped working

I've folded cables since the days of 386s and never had a problem. Even tried rolling them (edge to edge) and covering them with spiral wrap in full towers before round ones were available. Never noticed a problem with the round ones either. Have used them up to 24". My guess is that 18" is a very conservative limit.
