Rounded cables...are they as bad as everyone says they are?

Aren't rounded cables just ribbon cables bundled together and heatshrunk?

EDIT: Hmm after taking a look at that pic I guess not...

Ugh. I have that exact cable. It screws up the slave port periodically.

I have some quality ones that seem to be "folded cables" rather than stripped down.

i dont understand round cables...you can fold IDE cables so much easier. they are 10* easier to hide than round cables.

I actually like the look of round cables (good, solid looking ones, I don't really like that clear one), but that's just me. I HATE unsleaved molex cables though, ugh!

I have some nice multi-device SCSI 50-conductor internal cables, that are made like the "folded" example, except that they are sliced every 10 conductors, and stacked on top of each other. Seemed to work fine, at least for Fast-SCSI devices, when I still had them installed.

I'm not sure why "folded" would offer much superior performance to those "rounded" cables, as long as each signal wire shared a twisted-pair ground wire. The one thing that I couldn't determine from the pics - are those outer shield braids grounded too, or just for show?

im not saying there is anything bad about round cables, but if you fold IDE cables, you allow for more airflow than rounded cables (which is the primary reason for people buying round cables)

No you dont increase airflow with folded cables because they still have to "reach" across from the mobo to the optical/hdd drives. I have both and I have seen no issue with rounded cables, I like the rounded cables because they do improve airflow and in crampted spaces can be a life saver (My Dimension XPS R450 case) which has a zalman HSF, Volcano HSF, 2HDD drives (1 removable), 1 optical drive, FDD, and practically every pci slot is filled with some device (either a fan control, ports or actual PCI devices). So if anyone here has seen a dell XPS R/t series case then try to image shoving all of that into that case! And none of the drives have Seriell ATA interface so thats why Round cables help in my situation.

not if you do it properly.

Your post, like usual, makes no sense. Folded cables are an excellent way to increase airflow cheaply.

Thats one of the more immediate advantages of SATA drives. The cables are delicious! 😀

The improved performance is almost non-existant atm, but in the future they will have quite an advantageous data flow. But they are worth the extra few measly dollars to have such yummy cables.

I can't wait until optical drives start using SATA...

I 2nd that! Just started building a new comp. Has sata HD's, but I don't feel like waiting for 1year+ for a good selection of optical drives to come out with SATA interfaces.

Oh well. Next comp 😀

Now if only we had wireless electricity and "Super-duper High-speed Bluetooth 4.0". Then we could just throw all of our new PC parts into a cardboard box and they'd work without any cables or connections! Wirless connection to keyboard, mouse, speakers, and monitor would make it even better!

Here's the difference: Rounded cables are better for larger cases (large mid towers, full towers etc.) since the cable has to stretch across a large distance from the drives to the mobo. Flat cables are better for smaller drives, so you can fold them and tuck away the extra slack efficiently.

When i was buying my plextor DVD burner from Newegg i noticed a SATA version that they do so i guess they are allready moving that way. Though its hardly necessary from a speed perspective.

For those that are interested

Plextor 12x SATA DVD +/- RW
Whoa, neat, I didn't know optical drives went SATA yet!

Hmm, is it possible to use a SATA->PATA adapter on an optical drive without any problems? (Still able to boot from CD, etc)??

I love the little SATA cables.
