I wanted to get the smaller rounded cables for my PC and wanted to make sure it would work ok for both types of drives (hard drives, and optical drives).
The reason for the move to 80wire cables from 40wire cables was the interference caused by the induced current around an individual wire. The induction feilds associated with faster data transfer were interfering with the close-together wires.
80 wire cable is a 40 wire cable with a "dead" wire in between each "live" wire.
There are still 40 pins and 40 used wires in each type of cable, just a dead wire for spacing the live ones out.
THAT SAID- why get a rounded cable that just bring them all closer together?
I think this "twisted pair" they speak of is a GOOD rounded cable that some how avoided the problems I am mentioning.
