anyways, i thought this was mostly a british thing so i was wondering if any of you have round abouts in your cities and if you like them.

Round-abouts rock! I never understood why oh why there are all these 4-Way stops on bigger roads. US = far behind Euorope in that way.

I like em, because they're a twist in the street, so I can take em fast and have a little bit of fun :)

They have this thing in Australia but I couldn't drive yet back then so I have no idea.
Haven't seen it here in California.

we have some here in gainesville. There's one on my road now even. I like em. But I hate the 'fake' ones that is just a four way stop with a circle in the middle so you have to go around it. Some people try to use them as round abouts when your not supposed to. You're supposed to turn left in front of the fake cirlces!

If you know where you're going they're great as it's a relatively fluid intersection.

But if you DON'T know where you're going they can be a nightmare. I remember the first time we went to Hilton Head we didn't expect most of the major intersections to be roundabouts. I've got a great sense of direction, but the first night we arrived on the island it was the middle of the night and we came across several of those while looking for our hotel. That's one of the few times in my life that my internal compass went on the fritz.

Most entertaining one - especially on a GPS system - is the so-called 'Magic Roundabout' in Swindon.

Roundabouts are such simple inventions, and when people use them properly (which isn't difficult) it's great.

You know exactly where others are going, where you can go, and when you can get on. All you have to do is give way to the person already on the roundabout on the right (left in the US)

I don't understand why there are so many crossroads without roundabouts in the US, roundabouts are cheap, effective traffic management providing the 4 (or more) junctions have a reasonably similiar amount of traffic.

Higher traffic junctions often are better with traffic lights...unless you get to a junction where you are able to provide a "Magic Roundabout".

There is one in my home town (Colchester, Essex). Basically, it is one HUGE roundabout which you can go both ways round, and each exit has another mini roundabout. The one in Colchester has 7 exits, and the traffic flows very well around it. All you have to remember is to go round the mini roundabouts the right way and give way to people already on it, and then you can go round the "main" roundabout either way :) I haven't heard of any accidents caused there due to it being different, just the normal morons who got their driving licence in a box of cereal! ;)

i'd like to see your crazy round-about.. i wouldn't trust one of those here. I just barely trust the ones here... I love them.. but only when people know how to use them. I love it how people don't understand the concept of "Yeild" It does not mean jump in front of the oncoming car, nor does it mean stop and wait when there's NO one in the circle.

No, and I love them at least insofar as their application in England et al. I frankly question the intelligence of north americans to use them properly.

Tons of them here.

Funny as hell when someone who's never been on one attempts to use one. They always turn left, then realize that they're going the wrong way, back up, start going the right way, then second guess themselves, rinse and repeat. :D

I love taking those in my car when no one is around (the road it's on is pretty deserted), it's awesome.

I like them. It's fun ripping through one at 30MPH with my tires squealing.

Roundabouts are what the roads in hell have. The fact that some of them have made it to earthly roads is a sign of the coming apocolypse.

They're not that bad, just remember to turn right, then left.

This is an aerial photograph of the area, you can just about see the white mini-roundabouts in the middle. I'll see if I can go out and get any good photos over the weekend :)

I don't get how you can call the people who never drove on one and then do it wrong "idiots." It's something that most states in the U.S. do not require you to learn or drive on to get your license, so if you live in an area where there are NONE (i.e. where I am), and then experience one somewhere else, how could you POSSIBLY know what the hell to do until you watch other people first?

Don't know about your state but in California you must stop if there is yield sign and it is unsafe to enter.
