Rotors and Brake Pads

Ebaying for items that you rely your life on usually ends badly since if they break after installing changes are you are not around to leave a negative. 😉

Thats a rip.. if your rotors are thick enough, you can go to local shops, ie pepboys, and get them cut aka resurfaced for 8.50 (last time I did one).

If not, new rotors from online dealer store are usually cheaper. check tirerack.com for other rotors

I becareful about those cut / slotted from unknown ebay places.. you never know what type of material was used to make the rotors or pads..

what sensor do you need... that might be the most expensive item on your brake job

Pads/rotors/sensors/labor all around on a Q7 for $818? That honestly doesn't sound too bad. I just got done paying $400 for a transmission software update on a Volvo S60 R

My advice:

Go to Kragen. With a simple search, I found front wheel brake pads for a 2007 Audi Q7 Premium with the V8 in Orlando for $40.29 for the cheap ones and $73.99 for the ceramics. Rotors can be purchased for $103.99 each.

You can pay a dealer $818 to do it, or you can spend no more than $504 for absolute top of the line parts, $5 for a bottle of anti-seize lubricant, and $10 for some c-clamps and do it yourself.

Brake jobs are incredibly easy.

Edited to add: Also, you likely don't need new rotors or a new 'sensor'. IF your rotors need work (very unlikely if your car is an 07-08 which is what you linked to parts for) you can have them machined for much less. In all likelihood, unless you've been grinding metal-on-metal your rotors won't need to be touched. Mechanical shops love to sell you things you don't need like rotors and sensors. If you need a new sensor or two (also highly unlikely) you can pick them up for ~$50.

This is what I thought, but at tire kingdom they said that they cant resurface them because Audi uses a soft metal, which they are not able to resurface. ( what they guy said )

I looked up sensors, there 18bucks each.

germanautoparts.com - they have supplied a bunch of parts for our previous cars : 01 GTI, 95 Jetta and our A4 which we still drive. Always had great service and the parts were top notch. They have everything there you need for your Q7, I just checked. Add it all up and see what the price comes to.

EDIT, I just did it because I was bored. It came to $617.38 without counting shipping, so if you want to do it yourself, you'll be saving a little bit. But $150-$180 for labor for all 4 brakes is isn't the end of the world for a dealership price.

I agree with yh125d. That doesn't sound too bad. Maintenance on VAG vehicles is higher than some expect. 40K service on a DSG tranny runs between $200 and $300. It's $150 just for the parts; 6qt tranny oil and filter.

..transmission...software....update? $400?

Manual tranny FTMFW! :Q

That's just about right for a new set of rotors, pads and sensor for my mini from the dealership. I can get the work done for a bit less from a local guy who specializes in mini's plus for the same price he'll use.. well, allegedly better than OEM parts.. I don't know much about cars, so I'm probably being taken advantage of 🙁

I just know he makes the stupid brake pad light go away and I leave with a significantly lighter wallet.

if i can do it myself, you can too...

i did all four pads+rotors, and the rear calipers for ~300 in parts... saved at LEAST 500 in labor doing it myself..

i couldnt afford to have a shop do it... it was a bitch, yes, but it worked.... i had to go out and buy a torque wrench and an impact wrench for the calipers.

Hey Zane, good on ya to save $$ on your brake repair, but could you modify your sig so that it doesn't include a gigantic listing of PC parts? They seem a bit out of date anyway, you'll be doing us all a favor by making your posts a little more condensed 😉

A lot of people on here seem to be assuming the OP is taking about a break job on the front and rear, I'd be willing to guess it's probably front only, but the OP probably needs to specify.

What sensors are they replacing, exactly?

Also, it's a waste of money to buy drilled/slotted unless you actually need them, and buy quality parts. If you do track days or experience a lot of brake fade, that plus better pads would be a great investment. Otherwise, why bother?

Cheapo drilled/slotted are just scary. At best they'll just chew up your brake pads, at worst they'll overheat, crack, warp, or all three.

Yeah $800 sounds like it's not leaving enough room for labor if it's all four corners, but who knows.

Yeah wtf is that? Computer updates are normally done by a quick plug in and an hour of labor (despite it taking much less). wth

Go to rockauto.com and get the rotors and pads. Then install yourself or have someone install.
Your car, audi, is not special or has super magic brakes.

Good pads are $49 and front rotors(if needed???) are around $115 each at rockauto.com
