Rotating tires on a car with TPMS

I took my new Acura TL to Wal-Mart a few days ago to change the oil and rotate the tires for the first time. I didn't realize that tire pressure monitoring systems are more complicated. When they told me about the procedure they have to use and the $20 surcharge, I told them not to rotate them (I can trust Wal-Mart for oil changes or moving the tires around, but I don't want them doing anything skilled.)

Where do most of you rotate tires on a vehicle with TPMS? My dealership charges $20 to rotate them, which is fair enough, but it's a pain to schedule a time to bring it in to them, and they charge too much for oil changes (plus they immediately suggested their $132 "service" which included some vague checking of the brakes).

Any of you had problems with the TPMS sensors after rotating the tires? Where do you suggest taking it, if not the dealership?

Apparently you haven't seen the guys at my local Wal-Mart. :)

As to the oil changes, I got a card for my first oil change free at the dealership, but it costs after that. The main thing is I don't live close to the dealer, and you have to schedule an appointment, even for oil changes.

Your dealer sucks if you aren't getting oil changes included. You should at least be able to get a loaner if you drop it off in the morning and pick it up after work or whatever.

Actually.. you are veeeeery lucky with the dealer. Or your dealer is awesome, let me put that way. Besides free maintenance program by manufacture (ie BMW for 4 yrs, Mini for 3 yrs, Lexus and Audi for 1 yr), I had no dealer offering me free oil change without extended service program, which costs extra few hundeds $$ (which is obviously not worth in most case).

No offense, but I didn't start the thread to get opinions on whether my dealer should offer free oil changes. :)

My wife's suv doesn't have a seperate TPMS button. They tire place has to actually hook up diagnostic equipment to the ecu and reset the warning light. They didn't indicate there would be a surcharge so I expect them to do it free of charge.

I just had a couple tires changed but unfortunately only one 'expert' knows how to use the hand-held thingy and I keep missing him so I have to live with the idiot light for a couple days.

On my 2005 Acura you just have to drive a few miles and the readout corrects itself. At least that is what I was told by the dealer and it seems to work okay.

I can't believe they haven't released pics/specs for the '09 TL yet. ;)

I prefer my "Tire pressure monitoring system".

It sits in the glove box, cost $5 or so, and doesn't care if I rotate my tires.
