If the trend continues...gives me good feelings about upgrading next year.

Approximately 2-3 years ago it seemed ATI was going to start a "new trend" by stopping production of "older generation" cards/GPUs as the new generation cards came out (i.e., the old cards wouldn't be avaiable for cheap prices).

Remember the prices of the 9500 pro and 9700 pro just a year or so ago...they maintained expensive prices for a previous generation of cards?

Wow! I wish 9800 Pro's were this cheap when I bought my 6600GT! This has gotta be the best bang-for-buck video card you can buy!

It raises an interesting dilemna. $115 for a 9800 Pro out-the-door or $160 (or $150) for a 6600 GT after rebate. Is the 6600 GT really $45 better than the 9800 Pro? I dunno.

If you game at resolutions higher than 1024x768 with newer games, then yes, the GT is worth it. The GT also has a more advanced feature set. I'd personally spend the extra $45, but that 9800 Pro is certainly a great price!

The 6600GT has a couple additional features but it does NOT warrant another $45. The difference in performance is not that significant and having SM 3.0 on a card is pointless at this point and time. I'm not saying the 6600GT isn't a better card than the 9800 Pro because it is. But it's certainly not night and day. If the price difference were around $15-$25, then I'd lean to the 6600GT. But for $45, you really aren't going to make that much of an improvement in performance. As someone stated, this price makes the 9800Pro the best for your buck card on the market and it will hold you over until the next generation comes out, forcing the X800/6800 line to come down some in price.

Frankly, you're wrong and Anand disagrees.

linkage

While old games are fairly close between the 9800 and the gt, the gt spanks the 9800 in newer games (e.g. the stuff coming from here on out). SM3 isn't huge at the moment, but it is far from pointless. A game like the new Splinter Cell has a SM1.1 path and a SM3 path. The 3 path looks much better, and the 9800 simply can't run it.

If you can afford the extra $45, the GT is a better card by a fair margin. If you can't afford it, the 9800pro is decent, but it isn't in the same league as a whole product.

Personally, I'd spend the extra ~$45 for a 6600 GT over a 9800 Pro. But for those looking for the best bang/buck, a 9800 Pro for $115 delivered is a GREAT bargin.

Performance wise...it seems like the 6600gt gets about ~42 FPS on high settings in Doom3 while the 9800 Pro gets ~35 FPS at the same settings. So, with the above example in mind, are the ~7 FPS worth ~$45? It's all up to guy spending the money:)

Most people have to "stop" somewhere (or choose to stop) with regards to prices of video cards and for those wishing to spend ~$100 for a card, this is most definately the place to stop.

Otherwise, the upgrade dilemma sets in YET again (i.e., if I just spend $50 more I can buy a....and if I just spend $50 more on top of the original $50 increase I can buy a....we've all been there before).

Regards,

Bud

Ok, you've convinced me. I've been going back and forth about this since yesterday. I ordered this card. Then I had second thoughts so I cancelled the order. Then I started looking at 6600GTs. I had just enough in my PayPal account to buy one. But I couldn't make up my mind if it was worth the difference. Then my wife bought some Tupperware on Ebay that dropped my PayPal balance. So I ordered the 9800 Pro again. Going from some crappy 16MB card to the 9800 Pro should be a good thing.

I'm not sure, but the Rosewill sure looks a lot like the reference board by ATI. As a matter of fact, it seems ~60-75% of all the brands of 9800 Pro's I've ever seen look just like the ATI branded 9800 Pro's.

I bought two retail ATI 9800 Pro's because I got them for ~$176 shipped ~ 1 year ago. One from Outpost and one from Gateway.

I really need a good deal on a PCI-E video card! I'm building a new system and won't buy the mobo/cpu/RAM UNTIL I find a really good deal on a graphics board with 256MB RAM and 16 pipes!

I sure wish ATI/nVidia would announce some specs on the next generation of parts so perhaps some prices can start to drop;-) Maybe in a month or 2 I find a good deal...

Bud

This is extremely tempting as I've been debating the 6600GT fir a few weeks now. I'm not a fan of NVIDIA drivers, they never work well for me, so this being cheaper and an ATI might be the deal breaker.

I'm torn on the dilema as well, I had my heart set on a 6600gt awhile ago back when the 9800pros cost more or almost the same. Now they've both dropped, but thats a considerable savings on the 9800pro. Even though the 6600gt is the better card, the 9800pro is almost as good and quite a bit cheaper.

I dunno what to do!
