OMG it was such an easy choice.

I have always been drawn to the medical types of projects. Not that these are the only ones that can serve humanity, but I can sense on an inate level, the complexity of the mechanisms that give us life. It only makes sense that the computing power of DC (or something like it) is necessary to begin to build models that are meaningful in terms of todays science. As an engineer I live by a simple rule.... "your answer isn't going to be any better than your model" ie: get rid of those pesky "fudge factors" and it'll work!

With that in mind, I'm sure you can imagine how captivating it is to read things like this in the Rosetta forum, posted by David Baker (project developer):

... Yes--a difference between this project and other distributed computing projects is that you are actively participating in methods development efforts rather than large scale production level runs. Why are we doing methods development? It is because computational modeling of biological systems is still in its infancy, and if we can make the methods better, we will be able to produce much more accurate and useful models. While Rosetta is probably the best biological structure modeling program in existence today, we feel that it is important to work to make it still better. While you so far have seen the methods development aspect primarily, the program is being used for concrete applications already, for example we just helped build a model of an infectious component of anthrax toxin.

As I said below, we are actively engaged in trying to design a vaccine for HIV. In the near future we will start distributing vaccine design calculations along with the structure prediction methods development calculations, so you will be doing a mix of basic research with long term payoff, and vaccine design with potentially huge short term payoff.

And beyond all the cool science stuff... this project runs (on the BOINC platform) flawlessly for me. I got it all set up in minutes (literally). I never need to turn it off.. I game, I bring my work home (ORCAD), and of course I pester all of you regularly. Not so much as a sniffle from my system.

The work units are reasonable in size and don't consume the massive amounts of RAM that make us break out the $$ just to support another upgrade... I can decide all the things I want to decide..... cpu usage, sharing% with other projects.... How big a cache I want to keep around....

OK... I'm (edit: almost) done 😀

PS: I forgot to meniton... this isn't some hype in a cover page on the front of the site... this is the guy having a conversation with US! The atmosphere in the Rosetta forum is unbelievable.... considerate.... LOTS of involvement from the project developer(s) and a sincere interest in what the participants have to suggest.

An amazing project... I am so excited to be getting in it at the beginning!

Ill add it to my BOINC projects. (Itll only get 1/6 of my overall CPU time though... 🙁 I only have full access to one computer, and its already running 3 projects.)

EDIT : In! And its getting 1/4 of CPU time (a P4 3.06 w/ HT, BTW) while LHC is out of work.

EDIT 2: SB and Rosetta weren't getting along too well, but setting affinity fixed that. (I know theres a program that can do it at boot, so I'll be fine)

EDIT 3: Found the affinity program, and I should be able to create a BAT file that will start SB with affinity every start-up!

Yeah, Rosetta is one of my favorites too. Had it's slew of problems, but they are gone. 😀

yeah, they fixed 'em up in a hurry.

this is definitely my favorite project (so far 😛 ). i also prefer the medical projects and the fact i can run 2x while gaming is icing on the cake 🙂

Welcome Aboard ssvegeta1010

Glad you got the sharing thing taken care of! Could you put up a link (or the name and I can google it) to the program you found that dealt with affinity? (sound like a handy utility)

You just lengthened somebody's life!

I also think that R@H is the best DC project so far as far as the contact between devs and crunchers is concerned. I've got nothing but respect for those people.

Awesome (fellow engineer here)! I now know which DC project I'll be switching to when FaD ends. 😀

We'll have a welcome waiting for ya xComputerManiacx  :gift: 😎

Thanks for the linkage ssvegeta1010

It is nice to be able to watch it work in those (otherwise) dull moments.

(Some of the work units have graphics you can watch too!)

I haven't been fortunate enough to get a WU with graphics, but I already finished my first WU. Hopefully Ill get some credit soon!

As there's no qurom in R@H, you usually get credit right away, at most it's a 10 minute wait. 🙂

I just checked, and there it is! Nice! 😀

Very impressed with the communications from these people 😀

I didn't know WE were also working on Malaria!

One more reason........ (and counting)

Thanks Andy

I'm not sure someone has noticed it, but those damn cows are in a hurry to take over 7th place at R@H 😀
So they would like TA to clean up their spot 🙂
DPC will do the same for TA so they feel right at home:wine:
Remember, you don' t have much time to do so :clock:

I need some help setting up 2nd computer on this.

I downloaded boinc on the second computer. where do I go from here ? I get a failure to connect error. I get proxy configuration screen when I try to attach to a project. I have four more after this. My first time with boinc.

At the BOINC site, I found some threads about proxys here

I don't use a proxy and can't help, so until our gurus find this, here's a bump (and the link above)

-Sid

(hang in there 😀 )

That`s the thing
sid, I don`t use a proxy either. I have a bunch of computers hooked up to internet with a broadband router and a couple hubs ( wired ). Maybe I should reinstall boinc .

I see.....

An un-install/re-install does sound like a good idea. (I suggest version 5.2.7)

There were a couple posts about getting that message if it took longer than 3 seconds to connect... or something like that at their forum. (people not using a proxy)
