Rosetta@home computation Errors

I'm something of a noob to Rosetta@home, and about half of the WUs I get end up returning "computational error" before completion. Is this normal? My CPU is a P3 1GHz (Coppermine). On another note, I've got a lot of old comps laying around in my basement, and I've been thinking about installing windows and dedicating them to DC. TA(various BOINC projects) can expect to recieve about 6 GHz of combined Pentium Power in a month or so (After I finish college apps).

Edit: In the longer term, I'll be getting a new desktop and laptop in a few months, so add an Athlon 64 4000+ and a Turion ML-37 to the list.

don't know much about your rosetta errors other than there have been a bad batch of WU floating around for about the last 3 weeks, most have made there way thru the system though.

As for the added horsepower...sweet...glad to have you aboard

Can you tell us a little more about your setup.

What operating system, how have you set your boinc and rosetta preferences?

Unless the work units in your cache are more than a week or so old, it is not normal to see that kind of failures. Most of us haven't been seeing many at all for a few days now that the "bad work units" have circulated to extinction.

We'll help all we can.

To begin with a couple common things:

1. Rosetta is not officially supported on windows98 or ME

2. In the General settings of your Boinc Account (at the website) you need to answer the question 'leave work in memory while suspended' -> YES

I'm running Win2k with 512 MB RAM. Looked at the BOINC general settings, and activated the "leave work in memory while suspended". Hopefully that'll fix it. Thanks! Also, is #2 specific to Resetta@home? I haven't had this porblem with any other BOINC projects.

Yes, #2 is - at least for the time being - specific to Rosetta. There's a problem with some WUs the DEVs know about and are working on and option #2 is more or less a workaround for the problem right now.

As for you errors: if these error occur some 30 to 60 seconds after the WU started, then that's ok. All WUs contain a random number seed to vary the results of a WU. Sometimes that random seed was just a bit too random and it makes the WU crash after 30 to 60 seconds. So if that happens, that's not your fault but the WU's fault. Just don't worry about it, there's nothing you can do.
