First of all, a big welcome to our 2 new members, Hammer and kcjeeper! Glad to have you aboard! :)

Then, we passed the magic 1,000,000 points!! W00t!! :Q

Congrats to all our milestone makers today, especially petrusbroder who passed 50k despite his main cruncher being down. to danzigrules, Robert and Kruul for passing 5ks as well!

We're leading US-D by 8,000 points now and BOINC Synergy is coming closer. About 20 days left to the roadkill.

There were some problems today with R@H and WU distribution, but it should be back to normal by now. The devs are working on a permanent fix for the problem (= new hardware). More infos here

Thanks for the Numbers, Christian! :)
Congrats to the R@H - TeAm for the great milestone! for all!

@Race: I think I have a solution to the "crunching" errors for the Mac - testing it just now. If it works I will double my production. If not? Nothing lost but knowledge gained about what does not work ;)

Thanks for the stats BMC and also for the link to the explaination of the new work wierdities.

Ya gotta love it when it starts getting hard to pass out enough work. I hope "they ain't seen nothin' yet" :p

WELCOME to kcjeeper and Hammer Nice to see you in the stats with us. Thanks for joining in!

Congrats to the milestone makers. (that's a BIG one Peter!)

and so now we're all MEGAcrunchers! to 1,000,000

(WTG on the potential fix Peter! can you take a look at my coffee maker... it sounds funny lately :D )

Just an FYI, I'm Hammer :)

I have a quick question. How well does BOINC handle HTT? With F@H I set each core to it's own affinity, should I do that with BOINC as well? In fact, right now, one is only using 50% while the other isn't using any. I'm not sure how it all works with BOINC.

go to the general preferences section of your account settings and select it to use 2 CPUS (it says something like 'use at most ____ processors on multiprocessor machines'.)

then use the update button under the projects tab of the boinc manager. At that is what worked for the dual core AMD.

It defaulted to 2, I already checked that. I recall a while ago people said it would handle dual procs just fine by itself, but HTT is different than 2 physical cores.

we're going to need an Intel Guru. I looked around in the rosetta forums a little, the BOINC WiKi some and found very little. What I did find gave me the impression that if you had HTT capability and selected 2 cpus the boinc manager would run two work units at once OK. So I am clearly a numskull and have no idea why yours isnt.

To recap, your work tab only shows one work unit running? and your task manager only shows 50% of your CPU cycles used? what are the other 50% shown as doing?

finally, I wouldn't set afinity because then boinc can ONLY use the one you force instead of both..... er... I think

No it's running 2 at the same time most of the time. But so does F@H. The difference is with F@H I set each core to a seperate thread so they didn't collide. I read that it made it work better that way. Right now it says it is running 2, but CPU usage says otherwise. I'm wondering if I'll run into problems setting the proc affinity?

Yeah, don't set affinity.

I noticed that sometimes it took a while for the number of CPUs change to take effect. Give it a few hours. Once it took like 12 hours for the change to take effect.

Oh ... after changing the number of CPUs, you also have to update the client by going to the Projects tab and clicking Update.

Oops ... also, there are like three possible places to change your settings. Work, Home, and School. Make sure you change the one that your client is using.

EDIT: I think GleeM has given you the right answer..... (I just type too slow and didn't see it until after I posted the jibberish below  )

I have no idea what might happen if you try to install two instances of BOINC as F@H required.

It doesn't sound like a good idea.

And with a single installation, I don't see how you could set afinity because you want the BOINC client to use BOTH virtual CPUs.

My (VERY UNINFORMED) best guess would be to install the BOINC, let it run with the 2 cpu selection in your general preferences for a day or two and then try it with only 1 cpu
selected in the general preferences for a day or two and compare your production.

You aren't trying to run two instances of F@H at the same time you are running rosetta selected for 2 CPUs are you?

F@H didn't play very nice when I tried that on my X2. but It does fine with a single instance of F@H and rosetta selected at 1CPU. Then I get each CPU fully loaded with no overlap in resources.

If you set the affinity of the BOINC Manager, that might cause all of its processes to use that one processor. Which would explain what you are seeing.

If you set the affinity of the Rosetta process it would only run there until the WU is finished and the next one would revert to the default setting, probably

Thanks for the welcome guys. I used to be active with SETI for Team Anandtech but slacked off the last couple of years. Looking to put some of my home computers to a good use and thought this looked like a good cause.

See you all around.

Yeah, a very hard task master he is, BMC, a slave driver, especially for the dual graphics cards! ;)

Well the BOINC manager says 2 are running, task manager says only one is actually using the CPU, so I don't know how it works at all. Maybe next weekend I'll do some tweaking and see if I can make it work very well with HTT.
