Quick question just to make sure I have this right. To root (most?) android devices, you have to downgrade them first to cupcake?

I'm particularly interested in rooting my myTouch, since Cyanogen 5.0.7 is out (Android 2.1).

The version you'll be downgrading to has a security hole which you will exploit in order to get root.

Yes. Download the SAPPIMG.nbh file and run it. It will take you back to 1.5 and you can mod from there. If you ever need to go back to stock, just flash the sappimg and wait for the OTA update to 1.6.

I didn't see cyanogen 5.0.7. Looks like I know what I'll be doing for the next few minutes!

Okay, those instructions, while clear, were confusing as hell. But it now appears I have instead of a T-Mobile myTouch 3g, a rooted HTC Magic running Android 2.1.

No problem, Cyanogen's website is relatively new and an awesome resource for his custom ROMs.

The XDA community is awesome, Google should hire Cyanogen to polish up Android...

5.0.7 just came out today. It's a "preview" version by the way, there ARE a few bugs and some people are reporting high battery drain. Just FYI.

As a note, I left my phone "idle" last night after a full charge. Battery is still pretty much full.

Engadget or Gizmodo had a bit about his new rom the day before it was released, xda & cyanogen's site were hammered afterwards.

Feels a tad bit more responsive and less stuttery than 1.6 did. On the other hand, several apps seem to "lock up" for a good bit before they run properly.

I take that back. I'm 8 hours into my charge and my battery is at 40% with normal use. I did download a ton of apps this morning though. I'll give it test tomorrow and see how I do.

remember cyanogen's rom's overclaock by default.
I use setcpu to clock mine back down to stock 384mhz when I drop below 70% battery charge

yea...I always run overclocked. Setcpu will scale me back when I get below 20%. I'm not super worried about it.

OK...I can't hang. Its draining 15% per hour with all my apps installed. Going to try a couple of random ROMs until this gets fixed.

Rudeguy, did you reflash some other rom already?
If not, try these instructions: Charge phone to 100%, turn it off then charge till the light goes green. Pull the cable and reboot into recovery mode. If you have amen-ra's recovery, go to wipe>battery status then reboot. Use the phone till it dies and recharge to full and you should be fine. If you don't have amen-ra you can do the following:

go to console (or adb shell) and type:

mount -a
rm /data/system/batterystats.bin

su gets you root in Android terminal

They came out with a test version 2 that fixed the battery drain but messed with a lot of people's signal. I was showing HSDPA and had basically zero data connectivity. There is a fix now for that too.

Now I know why I have been sticking to stable versions. That was a lot of frustration!

Did you update to Test2? I just let me phone go all day yesterday. First few hours it sat happily near full charge, then I DL'd a bunch of apps mid day, and my phone was dead this morning (battery).

i've ran cyo mods for a while on my g1. currently i'm running fastest 3.0 with it overclocked to 528mhz and honestly(haven't tried newest cyo) it is the best rom i've installed so far.

If the Google Voice and Facebook actually integrated into my phone, this would be 100% win. Right now I would give it an 80%.

i have a few questions as i seem to only update roms every few months and seem to forget things.

currently i'm running fastest rom and RA-dream-recovery 1.5.2 and the latest OTA.. so can someone tell me if i need to flash to CM 1.4 recovery, then wipe ext/data, then install the rom?

I updated to Test2, waiting to see what battery life is like since my phone was DEAD this morning. Test2 seems faster for me.

Something to also keep in mind is look at the JIT post on the cyanogen forums. People are claiming their phones are all blazingly fast with it, but a few are also claiming it causes battery life to tank hard too. I'm going to wait till 5.0.7 is final and stable before I look at JIT, but I've also literally JUST started using Android anyhow.
