Root Canal

Found out I may need one or two. I've never had a root canal done before but I've heard that they sucked. For those who have experienced this, how bad of an experience is it to get a root canal from a dentist? Also, is there anything I can do to make it suck less?

I haven't had one either, but from what I hear they're only the stereotypically very painful procedure if your dentist isn't that good, but if your dentist is really good and isn't rushing, it's not that bad

From what my friend told me, get put to sleep. They gave him a choice of that or just regular anesthesia and he said it was hell.

its sucks for sure dude... I have 3 and believe me, they suck Jupiter's cock. its takes a looooong time, about an hour atleast? it feels like eternity. And no, there is nothing you can do to make it suck less... unless your doc has an option to make you go to sleep... Its not painful at that time as you gums are everything in that area is numb but it will hurt a little after a few hours, generally by next day you will be OK.

One word of advise though, don't delay the crown, get it ASAP. It will help a lot.

Good Luck!

I've been awake for mine. It takes a while compared to a filling but is not painful at all.

Afterward take some ibuprofen / advil as directed and you'll be fine. Be sure to have a bottle of it on hand, you may have some aching in the area for up to several days later.

the only painful part if getting the bill. I hope you have dental insurance

i had one a few months ago. was painless. my jaw was a bit sour but thats only because its not used to being wide open for that length of time

Do yourself a favor and go to an endodontist to get it done. I have had 2, and the pain that I was feeling before was bad. The drilling and the procedure was a cakewalk to the pain that got me to go get it done.

Meh...IMO, the worst part of a root canal is the cost.
I've had several over the years, and if you have a decent dentist, there's little to no pain past the novacaine shots.
It's far from being a FUN experience, but it's not as bad as some people make it out to be.

I had a root canal done on my front tooth. The dentist was a pro, gave be good amount of novacaine, and anesthesia. One hour worth of a job. I was watching TV at the same time, which distracted me from the operation.

Speaking of cost, how much have they ran for you guys? I probably need a couple, and my ins has a maximum

Don't think I have the option of to get put to sleep for the operation which sucks. There's no TV there to distract me, maybe they'll allow me to wear ear buds and listen to music or let me take a sleeping pill to snooze through it.

Bring your own music device. MOST dentists will allow it...some even provide it.
I doubt they'll allow you to take a sleeping pill, but don't hesitate to ask for nitrous. NO2 makes an otherwise unpleasant dental experience much more tolerable...

"Just crank up the gas, Doc."
Hit me with enough "happy gas" and the doc can take out my entire mouth to work on it...I don't fucking care."
I know a few folks who smoke a big fat joint before they go to the dentist...then get the happy gas on top of it. WOOHOO!!

I never had a root canal until last year. My regular dentist prides himself on his root canals, but the tooth I needed work on had a long curving root and he wasnt sure about it. So he sent me to a specialist. Like others have said a regular tooth cleaning hurt more, I really didnt feel anything except a little pressure now and then.

I thought he might give me pain meds, but just recommended motrin if I had any pain, and I didnt even need that I was very pleasantly surprised.

Root canals involve removing the nerve tissue in the tooth, cleaning it, and filling it with a biocompatible material.

This can be simple (single canal teeth) or difficult (multi-root, morphology, access, your mouth opening, angulation, calcifications, etc).

They can take an appointment or multiple appointments depending on the experience of the dentist/endodontist.

just had one done last week...it wasnt that bad EXCEPT when he stuck the 3rd needle into my roof of my mouth...that hurt like a mother and I think I even shed a tear...other than that it went fine...1 1/2 hours later
