Just put a new computer w/ roomie.
Asus K8V SE DLx
A64 3000+ Retail
Corsair XMS 3200
Lian Li PC65
Retail 9800 Pro
Enermax Noisetaker EG475P 470 Watt

Put everything together. When power on everything powers and lights on but nothing shows up on screen. Does anyone see any incompatibilities here? Also we tried swapping in my 9700 Pro and my Kingston HyperX ram with no success. I suspect possible DOA motherboard. Any one have any idea where the problem may lay? Any help wold be great. THanks!

i would try to put a pci video card in there, and see if agp is turned off by default in the bios.

Yeah, and if it won't run with the ATX12V cable plugged in, also unplug all fans from the motherboard's three-pin headers except the CPU fan, as a fact-finding step. Some low-rpm fans can boggle the motherboard... my A7N8X Deluxe won't POST if I have an Enermax thermally-regulated 80mm fan plugged into it at startup, for example.

Note that this includes any fan wire that might come from your PSU.

Are you hearing any beeps? No beeps usually means CPU not in correctly (or bad), bad motherboard, or power supply.

Once in a while the power supply will arrive set for the incorrect voltage, too. Check to ensure it's not set for 220V input by accident if you're not getting any results with the other steps. Also confirm that your AGP card really is bottomed out in the slot, which has two layers of contacts in it. If you can see gold contacts then she ain't all the way seated.

Also, I assume you did get the R9800Pro's power lifeline plugged in?

We double cheked votlage already. Thanks. As for being fully plugged in we held it firmly down manually to make sure. ANd yes the extra molex has been plugged in. Thanks again.

Out of curiosity, what case is being used? Is any front Firewire/USB wiring plugged in (if so, might try unplugging it temporarily)? You might double-check the I/O shield from the rear to ensure that the springy finger things surrounding the holes didn't sneak into the network jack or USB jacks... I've seen that happen.

Also, what monitor is being used? If it's a DVI monitor, try a VGA monitor just for kicks. The original K8V Deluxe had an issue with some high-end ATI cards and DVI, if I recall correctly.

hi- i'm the hapless roommmate

it's a lian-li pc65 case, and there aren't any usb/firewire connections... we dun have a vga monitor to try it on, think that might be the issue? like, it literally doesn't boot at all, no self-test or anything.

what a miserable first computer building experience, huh :brokenheart:

The issue that the original-generation K8V Deluxe had/has was resolved with the 1005 BIOS and your motherboard is newer, so I would think Asus would've ironed it out in advance.

Your motherboard does have the POST Reporter speech diagnostics... if you plug headphones or powered speakers into the green audio-out jack, does it say anything? Tried just one memory module, and different slots?

I have a K8V Deluxe and two Corsair XMS 3200C2 modules (and a Lian-Li case & Antec TP430 PSU) and I happen to be leaving the middle memory slot vacant, for the record.

mechBgon i plugged in headphones and after powering up, there's a voice that repeats "system failed CPU test"... the mobo's working but the CPU isn't?
Is there any other way i can test to see if the cpu really is the problem?

thanks for your help by the way, we were all for just shipping everything back in desperation

Hi there:)

Dont give up, the satisfaction that you get out of building your own comp cannot be paralleled by buying a dell, gateway etc online :D

I have the same PSU and that should not be the problem. However have you tried any other PSU? Also make sure that the video cable is pluged in properly at both ends! Sounds like a stupid thing to say but that also could be the problem.

Try carefully removing the heatsink (caution, it'll try to suck the CPU out of the socket along with it), remove the CPU and look over its underside for any mangled pins. If none, put it back in and hold it down firmly as you lower the lever, reinstall the heatsink/fan unit, and give it one more try.

And just to triple-check this... you've got the ATX12V cable plugged into the board, right? You guys sound like you know your way around a computer, so I doubt you overlooked that.

Might be a mobo grounding issue too. I had problem like that a long time ago, simply no boot activity at all. I took the mobo out, reinstalled it, and it worked. Turns out something was shorted from the mobo to the case, I don't remember it very well though.

I bet you're relieved THAT's been solved! :D Enjoy your new rig. I don't know what it is about the K8V's but they seem to have put the mobo's ATX12V receptacle in an easy-to-miss position or something, 'cause I see a pattern developing.
