well i thought it was funny :)

ok so here goes,

Roommate wanted to upgrade his PC to 1gig RAM. So he IM's me instead of coming up stairs which is legit, and asks me "is there any way of telling what type of ram i need without opening the case up?" and i tell him no i dont think there is, maybe if you run a program but its easier if you just open the case and look at the lable and just order exactly what you have.

So he does that, writes down the model number and chipset info. Few minutes later, he runs upstairs and asks me, my computer is beeping.... So my initial reaction was beeping = memory lol... since its the only thing he has changed. So i tell him check your memory it might be not seated correctly. And it wasn't.

Reason for beeping was he HE PUT IN THE MEMORY BACKWARDS and he fried the memory, ordered another 512mb from newegg and got it yesterday.

BTW- He is an electrical computer engineer, w/ math, Comp Sci Minor.... I so dont understand how a person with that background... would make a mistake like that, AND he had an internship job that involved of him building computers for 8 hours a day. 0_o

the end

Oh as for it being funny, you had to be there..

it had to do with him being a CE major / having an internship building pc's and he messes up his memory.

douche

I worked in a computer repair shop a few years ago.

Not many people know this, but a SLOT A processor will fit perfectly into a SLOT 1 motherboard, if inserted backward. I had some guy wander into the store wanting to know why his backward athlon and intel motherboard combo wouldn't boot.

those things go in only 1 way... those tabs on both sides are there to help guide the process.... how he could put it in there without realizing it is backwards is beyond me...

I think there was an older style of ram that could be forced in backward. The key was only slightly off-center, or something.

DDR is far easier to get in backwards than sdr... my friend did it once, it really isnt that hard. the notch is somewhat toward the middle on ddr, and there is only one. it is much more obvious w/sdr.
