Who cares, they hold resale value better.

Referencing your next post, how the hell can you say a contour outhandles a prelude?

SVT Contour my friend! Do some reading. The regular Contour made the C&D top ten list in '95 & '96, SVT engine made Wards Top Ten Best engine in '98.
What magazine awards a car receives has little bearing on reality.
I fail to believe a SVT contour outhandles a prelude. I need to see some data to back that up.

Also, the SH only adds 88lbs of weight to the prelude. That's not a lot of weight.

also honda reliability versus ford no-such-term.

Car and Driver yanked its Comparo between the 328i and A4 & SVT. C-SVT kept pace with the 328i and outperformed the A4. Sampson, I gurantee that the C-SVT can keep pace with the Prelude. Maybe not out-perform it but keep pace. Weight is the real issue it handles os well as it tips the scale at a thin 3000lbs. The C-SVT is like the Civic SI of the Honda family. Special everything.

And to the reliability issue:
I've had mine for over 5yrs and it's only been in the shop once for a broken shift tower, replaced under warranty. I paid $20,015 for mine new. $10K used for a 2000 with under 50K miles can be found as they depreciated poorly!

I suggest he look on Ebay and Autotrader for a better deal.
4 years is not old

indeed. My car turns 17 this year, although it is restored.

That's high for a Prelude. I bought a 2000 Prelude(automatic transmission :() a year ago with 35-36k miles on it for $14,300.

edit: I think that was about the normal price for private sellers according to edmunds.com.

Way too much. I had a 99 SH and loved it - very fun car.

But that price is WAY TOO MUCH.

-edit- oh and the resale is great! Paid 25K in 1999, sold for a steal at 12K in 2004. 13K over 5 years = not bad.

C&D means nothing to me, on top of that the article isn't about a prelude. I know the contour svt is a nice car, too bad no one bought it and ford discontinued the whole line.

Sure the c-svt can keep up, but it can't outpace. They had to soup up a contour in order to make it keep pace with a stock prelude. Not impressive at all. If you put any amount of money into upgrading the prelude (like the contour was) it will run circles around the contour.

Also, the non-sh prelude is just under 3000lbs and the SH is just over 3000lbs. Both vary by only less than 100 lbs. You can look that up, or I can post it for you if you don't agree.

Either way, your money would be MUCH better spent in a honda than a ford. But that's not the focus of this thread. :)

I bought mine 99 prelude (honda cert.) with 54k on it for 13.9k from the dealer a little more than a year ago. I love how it drives...... got good power..... and best of all the looks..... but I think 17.5k is a little high

Remember though that they will hold their value.... so if u r paying more than some other competition cars then u will get more too when u sell it..... and yeah for christ sake don't compare a tC with Prelude. tC looks like a granny car infront of a prelude.

I love Preludes but I ended up with a 2004 Accord Coupe. It doesn't look the same but it's the closest thing to the Lude in the current line.

If they still made Preludes you'd bet I'd have one of those right now :)

i agree. new>old, any day. its not that much slower, either.

if youre paying that much, it should have like half that mileage.

It comes with a 100,000 mile warrenty and it's in pretty good shape.

According to the Autotrader for this area, there are hardly any manual Preludes. They're also selling for about 18.5

I think there's much better options out there for that kind of cash, but I'm not big in to cars. Is there anything comparable for about the same price that he can get used or new?

2 door/4 door is fine, somewhat sporty would be nice and I think a manual is almost needed.

Thanks guys

EDIT: I'm looking for ALTERNATIVE cars, not 'oh man preludes suck/rock. That's a ripoff' or whatever else is bound to come up

Your friend should ask the seller for an alternative price for that prelude...something more in-line with KBB value =).

The prelude's a good car! But not worth 17k after 50k miles on it.

Prelude compared to Contour SVT??? Please.........can't compare the handling of the Prelude to a FORD....SVT or not. The most recent Focus SVT may come close but don't ever compare a contour to a Prelude. I think the price is a little high....but they are durable cars. I've had mine since '97 and mine is still solid with just over 110,000 miles.......

As an owner of a 99' SH for over 5 years and a sports car driver for over 14 (including M3, stang) I can say this about the prelude...

Incredible handling and sheer fun to drive - you must get a true sports car to even come close to the feel they have. too bad it was underpowered, because that's all I ever wanted from mine.

98 Honda Prelude SH

This is a rather rare Prelude SH. It was listed as Car and Drivers Best Handling vehicle for under $30k until it's retirement in 2001. The car features ATTS (a first ever). ATTS stands for Automatic Torque Transfer System. This system transfers up to 80% of the vehicles torque to the outer wheel when taking a turn agressively. Essentially a LSD, but better

The Prelude has 108000 miles, not too bad for how many trips we've made to Colorado and back. This car has alot of potential.
It's been kept in immaculant condition. Looks better than most of the 2001's running around. This color is only on 97-98 Preludes and I may be biased, it looks alot better
There is no maintenance required on this vehicle.. you buy it, it'll run fine.

Engine: H22A4 4Cyl
Horsepower: 195 @ 7000 RPM
Torque: 156 @ 5250 RPM
4 wheel disk brakes and ABS/Dual Airbags/Leather wrapped Steering Wheel/Power Mirrors/Locks/Windows/Power Moonroof/Fold Down rear-seat/Rear Spoiler

Misc Options/Add-ons:
- Honda OEM Front Lip (discontinued)
- Honda OEM Rear Lip (discontinued)
- OEM Rear Trunk Mat (discontinued)
- OEM Interior CF Trim Kit (discontinued)
- OEM Fogs
- OEM Floor Mats (2 sets)

Price
NADA Guides
Average Trade-in: $8,350
Average Retail: $10,300

KBB
Average Private Party: $8,830
Average Retail Value: $11,000

I'm asking a little below the average price which is $9000
This is negotiable.
