I would take $80 worth of his belongings and give them to charity. Tell him next time he takes your stuff without asking you're taking everything he owns, putting it out front and putting a 'free' sign on it.

The PROPER thing to do (IMO) is to be UPFRONT and direct. Pull the guy over and tell him that it was BULLSH*T to take your tables, AND WITHOUT asking, and then return them (ONLY after bitching for months) in SH*T condition.

Then tell him you EXPECT him to give you either the value paid ($80) or a replacement of the items that is equal value and you EXPECT to have it within a week...PERIOD.

If you don't stand up for yourself, NOTHING will change.

I STRONGLY suggest NOT going with the idea of borrowing something of his and trashing it...That belittles you to his level, not to mention sets the tone for a war of escalation as you each do such things to each other in a growing scale...I know all about it, I used to live in a house with 3 other guys.

Since he did not ask your permission, and the tables are dimished in value, he owes you.
However, getting him to pay is another thing. Last resort would be small claims court; course you need proof. If it's just your word against his, it's an even draw.
You just need to tell him: "Since you took my new tables without asking and now they are sh!t, you bought them. I need the money now."
